Sally Lindsay’s little-known ’80s TV appearance revealed and why it could never happen now

TV personality Sally James recently shared a story about Sally Lindsay, the actress from Coronation Street, and a surprising TV appearance Lindsay made in the 1980s – something that wouldn’t be possible today. James is well-known for hosting the ITV children’s program Tiswas alongside Chris Tarrant, a role she held from 1977 until the show finished in 1982.

James recently told a story on the Suddenly Single podcast about Corrie actress Lindsay. He shared that when she was a child, she performed with St Winifred’s School Choir on the show Tiswas.

James mentioned that Sally Lindsay was a member of the choir. They had a song called “Grandma” and were invited on as guests because of it.

They genuinely believed they were appearing on a television show to perform their song. The girls were all dressed up in cute party dresses, and they were around eight or nine years old when they began to sing.

James recounted how her co-host, Chris Tarrant, playfully threw a bucket of water at a group of schoolgirls, and then continued throwing more, remarking on his ability to really throw a bucket well.

The presenter explained that the prank upset the children, making them cry. James wondered if something like that would even be allowed on television today.

She described people collapsing and weeping, calling it compelling television. She then wondered if anyone would even consider attempting something similar today.

Lindsay is well known to soap opera fans for playing Shelley Unwin on Corrie from 2001 to 2006. She also spent time as a panelist on Loose Women between 2011 and 2014.

She recently starred in and co-created The Madame Blanc Mysteries, a cozy crime drama for the Channel 5 network, working alongside her husband Steve White.

Since its debut in 2021, the show has run for four seasons and included three Christmas specials. A longer-than-usual Christmas episode was recently announced.

I’ve been watching The Madame Blanc Mysteries, and honestly, one viewer hit the nail on the head – it’s a really fun, cozy show. Perfect for relaxing with a glass of French wine!
