Right now, alongside the second season of Squid Game, Sakamoto Days has become the second most popular non-English television series and the biggest hit in anime on Netflix.

Approximately two weeks have passed since the debut of Sakamoto Days on Netflix. Since then, it has emerged as the most successful anime series on the platform since Netflix began sharing weekly viewership data. So, what’s all the buzz about Sakamoto Days, and what do people think of it?

The manga series known as “Sakamoto Days” was penned and sketched by Yuto Sukuzi in the year 2020. By December 2024, this manga had a staggering 7 million issues distributed worldwide.

Sakamoto Days storyline

The narrative centers on Taro Sakamoto, a formerly renowned assassin who’s now embraced a tranquil lifestyle as a devoted family man. His encounter with Aoi, the woman he adores, accelerated his retirement. Together, they raised a daughter named Hana and eventually established their own family-owned corner store in a quaint suburban setting. However, this serene existence was shaken when past adversaries resurfaced with vengeful intentions. Unable to stand idly by while his loved ones were threatened, Taro found himself compelled to address these matters anew.

This anime offers a blend of adorable storytelling and high-octane action, interspersed with heartfelt family moments and intriguing encounters between Taro and the antagonists. Initially, some viewers criticized the animation due to its deviation from the typical style of manga adaptations into anime that we are accustomed to.

Fans had expectations for the animation to be fire

Following the reveal of Sakamoto Days’ impressive ratings, responses were varied. Some supporters defended the show against critics, arguing that the story is engaging enough to overlook any perceived flaws in its animation. One fan even commented, “Not every series needs to have the quality of JJK or CSM in terms of animation.

Fans of manga have been asserting that the series “Jujustu Kaisen” possesses the quality and narrative to warrant an exceptional animated adaptation. It’s evident that those expressing disappointment are avid manga enthusiasts who anticipated a spectacular animation given the manga’s greatness. Meanwhile, other fans find themselves in a middle ground, acknowledging that they expected more from the animation, but not to the extent of considering it as poorly received online.

All things considered, despite a varied response from viewers, the show has been performing exceptionally well since its premiere on January 11. It currently ranks second among non-English TV series, just behind Squid Game, and fourth overall. In five countries, it even took the top spot, garnering nearly nine million views on Netflix.

The two sides of high-level animation

In his blog post, Mr. AniGuy discussed how popular anime series like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen have generated significant excitement for animation and a fascination with top-tier visuals. However, the issue arises when lesser-known animations struggle to gain recognition in an industry that values high production quality, often leading other works to be labeled as “unexceptional” or “ordinary”.

Shows not delivering the same visually striking moments as “Demon Slayer” or “Jujutsu Kaisen” are frequently categorized as merely average or mediocre.

In the case of “Sakamoto Days”, its manga is famed for thrilling action sequences, leading fans to have significant anticipation when one of its crucial fights was turned into an animation. Although the scene was skillfully made, it fell short compared to the awe-inspiring visuals of “Attack on Titan” or “Fate”, and instead of acknowledging the effort, fans compared it to these exceptional examples and deemed it “disappointing”.

He expressed that even with limited budgets, smaller studios can create exceptional series.
