Saipan Steve Coogan and Éanna Hardwick transform into Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane in new film about about their furious bust-up at the 2002 World Cup
As a die-hard soccer fan with a penchant for British humor and a soft spot for nostalgia, the upcoming film “Saipan” has me absolutely thrilled! I can hardly contain my excitement as Steve Coogan steps into the shoes of Mick McCarthy, a role that promises to be nothing short of brilliant. And Éanna Hardwick’s portrayal of Roy Keane? Well, it’s simply the icing on the cake!
For the very first time, Steve Coogan and Éanna Hardwick can be spotted taking on the characters of Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane respectively in the brand-new movie titled Saipan.
The Alan Partridge actor, 59, takes on the part of s embattled Irish national manager Mick, while Éanna will play Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that the movie would center around an iconic incident from Irish sports lore – the highly-publicized rift between Keane and McCarthy.
An upcoming movie teaser unveiled prior to its release features images of Coogan and Hardwick portraying their characters in a steamy room environment. In this scene, a bare-chested Coogan is draped with a towel slung over his shoulders.
Meanwhile, Hardwick’s Keane is sat beside him wearing an Irish football kit.
Saipan will follow the events leading up to Ireland’s 2002 World Cup campaign.
The story, as described in its summary, is referred to as a “tremendous real-life comedy of extraordinary scale” that focuses on the “deep-rooted competition between Keane and McCarthy that extended beyond the field and captivated an entire nation.
At first glance, the dispute seemed centered on rules, but beneath that facade, it was a profoundly emotional tale of two individuals whose animosity and disdain for each other transcended their shared passion for sports. This book provides an unrivaled portrayal of one of the most contentious rifts in sports history.
In the end, Keane departed from the Irish team prior to the commencement of the tournament in Japan and South Korea, following a high-profile disagreement with McCarthy that became public knowledge.
After Keane’s interview with a newspaper criticizing the Football Association of Ireland for their preparation and facilities, there was a heated discussion between the two individuals.
The soccer player allegedly verbally attacked McCarthy in the presence of his fellow players, using a disrespectful phrase that suggested McCarthy should take his World Cup trophy and put it somewhere inappropriate. Later, McCarthy contested this account and asserted that he sent the player back to Ireland instead.
It was reported that Keane was allegedly very angry about the training environment, tactics, travel plans, meals, and even McCarthy’s skills.
As a committed team member, I found myself initially persuaded to rethink my departure from the squad. Regrettably, a disagreement ensued that ultimately led me to part ways with Manchester United, despite my initial intentions.
The Japanese island where Ireland was stationed, Saipan, will narrate the sequence of events that preceded Keane’s departure.
As a lifestyle expert, I find myself often reflecting on pivotal moments that reshaped our world, and one such instance is the unforgettable week in 2002 on the small island of Saipan. Countless narratives have been woven around this event, and as I delve deeper into its history, it continues to captivate my imagination.
In the coming year, spectators will have an opportunity to witness directly the conflict between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy, and understand why this dispute is known as ‘the most disastrous preparation for a World Cup campaign in history’.
In the absence of Keane, Ireland ended up as runners-up in Group E, maintaining an undefeated streak throughout the group stage. They even managed a dramatic draw against Germany at the last moment. However, their journey was cut short when they lost to Spain in a penalty shootout during the round of 16.
In November 2002, McCarthy stepped down, and Keane came back to play for Ireland again under his replacement, Brian Kerr. However, following Ireland’s inability to advance to the 2006 World Cup by assisting them in their qualification process, Keane decided to retire from international football.
The supporting case includes Alice Lowe, Jamie Beamish, Alex Murphy, Harriett Cairns and Peter McDonald.
I, as a passionate cinephile, am thrilled to share that the upcoming film, ‘Saipan’, is being masterfully directed by the visionary duo, Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa, who have previously enchanted us with their work on ‘Good Vibrations’ and ‘Ordinary Love’. This time, they are working from an original script penned by Paul Fraser, the genius behind ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’. Bankside Films is taking care of sales, and they will be presenting a captivating promo to potential buyers at the American Film Market.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that an upcoming film I’m excited about is being brought to life by Macdara Kelleher and John Keville from Wild Atlantic Pictures (known for ‘Evil Dead Rise,’ ‘Cocaine Bear,’ and ‘Black 47’). They’re joined by Trevor Birney and Oliver Butler of Fine Point Films, renowned for their work on ‘Kneecap’ and ‘No Stone Unturned’. Patrick O’Neill and Rachael O’Kane will be serving as executive producers. This film has been secured by Wildcard and Vertigo Releasing for distribution in the UK and Ireland, with plans for a theatrical release set in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated production!
