SAG-AFTRA calls strike against ‘League of Legends,’ the latest step in video game actors’ battle
As a lifelong admirer of the arts and labor rights, I find myself deeply moved by the recent developments in the SAG-AFTRA strike against Formosa Interactive. It seems that the performers union is standing firm against the blatant disregard for fair labor practices by this audio company, and I couldn’t be more proud of their unyielding stance.
In response to alleged breaches of the ongoing strike agreement, SAG-AFTRA has included “League of Legends” among the games on its blacklist, aiming to penalize audio firm Formosa Interactive.
On Tuesday, the entertainer’s guild formally excluded “League of Legends” from the strike, having previously lodged allegations of unfair labor practices with the National Labor Relations Board against Formosa Interactive (a Los Angeles company specializing in post-production work).
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has alleged that Formosa, known for hits like “League of Legends,” is trying to undermine the video game strike by hiring non-union workers for one of its strike-affected projects, while disguising itself as a different company.
Since July, I’ve joined thousands of fellow voice-over artists and motion-capture professionals in the gaming industry who are standing united in a strike. The reason behind this action is that we, as represented by our union, have yet to come to an understanding with game developers regarding the use of artificial intelligence in our work.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, head negotiator and national executive director of SAG-AFTRA, stated that it’s troubling that companies like Formosa and others are unwilling to accept the fair A.I. terms which have been endorsed by the film, television, streaming, music industries, along with over 90 game developers.
It’s completely unacceptable for any organization to engage in unlawful and unethical labor practices. Such actions will not be tolerated by the members of SAG-AFTRA. In response, Formosa will face consequences, beginning with an immediate work stoppage or strike by the League of Legends union.
On Tuesday, neither Formosa Interactive’s nor the video game companies’ representatives promptly provided a comment in response to The Times’ request for one.
This is a developing story.
