Be warned, this contains spoilers for the final season of Stranger Things! Sadie Sink has addressed a scene involving her character, Max Mayfield, that many fans found frustrating. The scene, which has become popular for both parodies and criticism online, appears in episode 6 of Stranger Things season 5. Instead of immediately escaping Vecna’s mental trap, Max pauses to share a touching conversation with Holly Wheeler.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Sadie Sink discussed a particular scene and whether she felt pressured during filming. She explained that she didn’t feel any rush at the time, but watching the scene later, she realized it needed more energy. She wished her character, Max, had run instead of acting so calm – like she was simply chatting on a podcast.
While I was filming, I wasn’t really focused on speed. But looking back at the footage, it’s obvious I was moving very slowly. It makes me wonder why we weren’t acting more quickly, like just rushing to get things done!
Sadie Sink, as a viewer, understands why fans reacted the way they did and doesn’t hesitate to playfully critique her character’s choices in that moment. Max’s hesitation feels especially significant considering how long she’s been stuck in the mind prison and how many times she’s already tried and failed to break free.
However, her lengthy farewell with Holly is meaningful. Although Max manages to break free, Holly remains trapped. It wouldn’t have been like Max to leave Holly behind, considering all they’d experienced together while trapped in Vecna’s mental prison.

Max explains to Holly that she doesn’t need a relationship or music to cope with her problems. Instead, she needs to find something meaningful that grounds her and reminds her of home. In this moment, Holly also admits she feels guilty for not taking action when her family and friends were hurt earlier in season 5 of Stranger Things.
In the final episode of Stranger Things, Max’s support empowers Holly Wheeler to step up and guide her friends to safety from Vecna. This moment feels earned because of their earlier conversation in episode 6, even if it briefly interrupts the urgent escape.
The final season of Stranger Things has sparked a lot of debate, particularly regarding what happens to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). However, most viewers have reacted positively to the conclusion of Max’s storyline. Despite being introduced later in season 2, Max became a crucial character, and her ending felt as significant as those of the original characters we’ve followed from the beginning.
