S.W.A.T. Star Shocked by Show’s Sudden Cancellation and Spinoff Without Him
It came as a surprise to everyone, even the cast, when it was revealed that “S.W.A.T. Exiles” is in production. Starring Shemar Moore, this series serves as a continuation of the beloved CBS show that concluded from the 2025 TV schedule this spring. At present, only Moore has been confirmed to reprise his role, and other actors have expressed their thoughts on the original series ending. Now, Jay Harrington is expressing his views on the show’s termination, his belief that there was still hope for continuation, and the spinoff moving forward without him and his co-stars.
The star who appeared in 163 episodes of “S.W.A.T.”, playing Deacon on the series, spoke with TV Line about the program’s repeated cancellations and revivals, along with the upcoming spinoff. He revealed that discussions about a spinoff hadn’t taken place during filming for the final season, and even during the last episode, he was unaware of “Exiles”. Yet, despite this lack of knowledge, he maintained optimism that the show could be rescued, expressing his hopeful sentiment:
Completely ruled out. After years of [S.W.A.T.] being canceled and revived, I had the idea, ‘Alright, we could return.’ There’s always a chance, never say die, particularly with the streaming era. My thoughts were either it continues, or it ends. A spin-off was certainly not on my list of possibilities.
From what Harrington understood, it seemed likely that S.W.A.T. would either carry on or be among the series concluding in 2025. However, he was unaware of the spinoff that now boasts a ten-episode commitment.
Three days prior to the May release of the finale (available for streaming with a Paramount+ membership), he discovered about “Exiles.” As he shared, it was Moore who informed him of the decision to proceed with the plan.
Yesterday was the day in question. Shemar communicated with everyone by saying, ‘Here’s the latest situation…’, and it seems there’s chatter that they might get in touch with us regarding certain matters. He wanted to be the one to fill us in, and mentioned that ‘you’ll learn from your representatives soon.’ That was when I informed my representatives about it, and to my surprise, they were clueless.
Additionally, other actors have voiced their opinions on the suddenness of this announcement. David Lim, in particular, discussed the spinoff and mentioned that he wouldn’t be truthful if he claimed the rapid launch of the new series didn’t hurt a bit.
Harrington openly acknowledged that sudden and unexpected changes are frequently encountered in this line of work. Furthermore, he shared insights on how such an attitude is shaping his thoughts about S.W.A.T. potentially wrapping up.
Let me clarify my stance. I’ve been in this industry for quite some time now. Merely investing time doesn’t entitle you to anything. If they decide to proceed in that manner, I wish them luck. It’s a delicate balance between feeling entitled and simply being informed. Essentially, the studio is suggesting a new direction, one that requires a clean break and fresh start. Unfortunately, this structure doesn’t allow for any prior commitments to be honored.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d say: “To get your hands on CBS’s extensive collection of shows like S.W.A.T., you’ll need a Paramount+ subscription. Prices start from just $7.99 monthly. If you’re looking to add Showtime and remove ads, consider the Premium plan for $12.99 each month. Check it out!”
Despite acknowledging that such scenarios are common in the entertainment industry, he focused on the aspect that brought “disappointment.” He clarified that the omission of recognition towards the dedicated S.W.A.T. cast members who’ve been with the show for years, was particularly painful for him.
Well, how about that? My response would be ‘Alright then, good luck!’ However, it was a bit disheartening when they made the announcement and failed to acknowledge us at all. But I quickly moved past that because I knew deep down that the eight years of hard work we’ve put in can’t be overshadowed by this.
Harrington continued by expressing that although it hurt, he wouldn’t let it spoil his optimistic outlook towards the CBS drama. Moreover, he emphasized, “It’s just showbiz.” He’s also excited that many of the original crew members will be joining for the spinoff project. Regarding his potential role in the continuation of S.W.A.T., he said, “I might return, you never know.
In essence, this situation is deeply affecting for numerous reasons. Jay Harrington hinted at the possibility of the show continuing due to its history of being revived. Nevertheless, it truly concluded on this occasion; the spinoff came as a surprise, and what upset him the most was the omission of any mention about the cast that played crucial roles in the original series’ success.
In this interview, I found him expressing an intriguing notion of starting anew and crafting a fresh narrative. Yet, he emphasized that this idea is inseparable from the accomplishments of the past.
