Ryan Reynolds shared that he hired Gwyneth Paltrow for a commercial shortly after the public attention around her kiss with Chris Martin at a Coldplay concert.
During Coldplay’s concert in Boston in July, Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and former HR executive Kristin Cabot were unexpectedly shown kissing on the venue’s kiss cam.
A quickly shared video showed the two individuals stepping away from the camera, and singer Chris Martin playfully suggested to the audience that they might be having a romantic encounter.
Byron and Cabot both resigned from the tech firm, and shortly after, Paltrow – formerly married to Martin – starred in a funny public service announcement as a quick response to the resulting publicity issues.
Ryan Reynolds, whose company Maximum Effort helped create the advertisement, explained how it came about during a question-and-answer session at the Wall Street Journal’s CMO Council Summit, according to People magazine.
Just fourteen hours later, I was starting to feel the consequences, and I hadn’t gotten their approval yet. But at the time, I knew nobody understood what Astronomer actually did. So I thought, ‘Maybe Gwyneth could explain it?’
Deadpool’s actor praised Astronomer, saying they’re a fantastic company that does incredible work.
According to the company website, they help data teams build and launch important software, data analysis tools, and artificial intelligence applications.
Reynolds explained that this was a chance for the group to shift the discussion away from its previously negative and harmful state, and instead concentrate on something positive, enjoyable, and emotionally resonant.
In the public service announcement, Paltrow appeared seated at a desk, acting as the temporary spokesperson, with soft corporate music playing in the background.
The video began with the Academy Award-winning actress saying, “Thank you for your interest in Astronomer. Hello, I’m Gwyneth Paltrow.”
I was brought in for a short time to represent the more than 300 employees at Astronomer.
She explained that she’d received many questions from people interested in astronomy recently, and she was going to address the ones asked most often.
A question suddenly popped up on the screen, asking, ‘Q: OMG! What the heck?’ The broadcast then quickly returned to showing Gwyneth Paltrow.
The actress then said, ‘Yes! Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow.’
She jokingly acknowledged the increased attention the company received after the scandal, saying, ‘It’s great to see so much new interest in how we automate data processes.’
Another question appeared on the screen and read, ‘Q: How is your social media team holding-.’
The video then cut back to Paltrow, who cheerfully announced, “Great news! There are still spots open for our Beyond Analytics event this September!”

She ended with a thank you for everyone’s interest in Astronomer, and honestly, it felt like a promise of even bigger things to come!

Kristin Cabot filed for divorce from her husband on August 13th in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Both she and her husband requested that the divorce records remain confidential.
