Ryan Reynolds R-Rated Comedy Animal Friends Delayed Again in 6th Release Shakeup

He’s a very popular actor with several upcoming projects, including an R-rated comedy.

I’ve been following this comedy for a while now. It was first announced back in April of 2023, and filming actually started a couple of months later in June. They finished shooting in mid-April of this year, 2024, but it hasn’t been a smooth ride. The film has gone through a lot of changes since then, and unfortunately, it’s been delayed again. We’re now looking at a release date of January 22nd, 2027.

Animal Friends Underwent Multiple Release Changes

The movie finished filming in early 2024 and was initially planned for release on August 15, 2025, with Sony Pictures (under the Columbia Pictures label) as the distributor. However, late in 2024, things changed: Sony lost the distribution rights, and Warner Bros. took over.

The release date has changed several times. Originally planned for October 10, 2025, it was first moved to May 1, 2026, then to June 5, 2026. Currently, Animal Friends is scheduled to be released on January 22, 2027.

Deadline reports the movie’s release date has been changed because the film’s famous actors will have more time to promote it in early 2027. The new date also has the benefit of less competition, going up against only the smaller films The Third Parent and Air Bud Returns.

The R-rated comedy Animal Friends features a star-studded cast, including Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa (known for Aquaman), Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Rec), Addison Rae (Thanksgiving), Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), and Ellie Bamber (Red, White & Royal Blue).

I was really excited to see this film, and I learned it was directed by Peter Atencio! The story itself came from the clever writing of Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. It was a great team effort, brought to life by Reynolds’ own Maximum Effort production company, alongside the talented folks at Legendary and Prime Focus Studios.

This funny movie combines live action with animation and tells the story of two animals on the run. They travel across the country to find the farm they used to live on, and along the way, they rebuild their friendship. Hot on their trail are a mismatched DEA agent and a wildlife ranger, both determined to prove themselves.
