Ryan Reynolds & John Krasinski’s IF Film Finds Streaming Success Post-Theatrical Release

The fantasy film IF, starring Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski, is proving popular with viewers around the world after hitting theaters in 2024. The story follows Bea, played by Cailey Fleming (known from The Walking Dead), who has the unique ability to see people’s imaginary friends. John Krasinski directed, wrote, and plays Bea’s father, while Ryan Reynolds appears as a neighbor.

Even though critics were divided and it didn’t perform well in theaters, the movie IF is now finding an audience on streaming services. It’s currently climbing the charts on Paramount+, reaching the No. 7 spot in several countries.

The top films on Paramount+ this week include Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, The Naked Gun, High Ground, The Stranger in My Home, Trust, and Night Hunter. World War Z, Take Cover, and Mean Girls complete the top ten.

Currently, the film IF ranks as the third most popular movie in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, El Salvador, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It’s reached number four in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Peru thanks to a surge in viewers.

Currently, the film IF is streaming on Netflix in Australia and ranks as the seventh most popular title on the platform.

You can watch IF on Paramount+ and Prime Video in the U.S., but it hasn’t become a top 10 hit here like it has in many other countries.

Although starring two well-known actors, the movie IF didn’t perform as well as expected when it came out in theaters in May 2024. It earned $190.3 million, despite costing $110 million to make.

The movie wasn’t well-received by critics, earning a low 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences enjoyed it much more, giving it an 85% rating on the site’s Popcornmeter.

IF (2024) Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Critics 51%
Audience 85%

In addition to Ryan Reynolds, John Krasinski, and Phoebe Fleming, the movie IF also stars Fiona Shaw, Alan Kim, Liza Colón-Zayas, Bobby Moynihan, Catharine Daddario, and Barbara Andres.

The movie boasts an impressive voice cast playing imaginary friends, including Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Awkwafina, Emily Blunt, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon, Bill Hader, Keegan-Michael Key, Blake Lively, Maya Rudolph, Amy Schumer, and Jon Stewart.

Given the film’s famous cast and extensive visual effects, it’s no surprise IF had a large budget. However, the movie needed to earn significantly more money in theaters to justify those costs, and unfortunately, it didn’t.

Although it received mixed reviews when it came out in 2024, the movie IF is now doing well on streaming services worldwide. It’s keeping fans entertained while they wait for Ryan Reynolds to return as Deadpool in Avengers: Doomsday this December and for John Krasinski’s next Quiet Place movie in 2027.
