Ryan Reynolds’ Comic Book Disaster: A Rotten Tomatoes Score Worse Than Green Lantern!
To some, the poorly received Green Lantern movie might be considered the actor’s worst comic book adaptation; however, there’s another production he’s involved in that is even more critically panned. The supernatural action comedy starring Reynolds, known as >, has found a new home on streaming platforms over a decade since its initial release in theaters.
Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, you can catch the movie titled R.I.P.D.. Initially, it was accessible on Netflix, but now it’s their turn to enjoy it! The film is adapted from Peter M. Lemkov’s 1999 book with the same name.
The movie titled “R.I.P.D.”, which debuted in 2013, was met with a cold reception from critics who criticized its concept. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a dismal 13% critical rating, even worse than the Green Lantern (25%). At the box office, it failed spectacularly, managing to make just $78.3 million despite an estimated budget of $154 million. Interestingly, a prequel reboot titled “Rise of the Damned” was unveiled in 2022; however, this too skipped theaters and went straight to Blu-ray and DVD releases.
What Is R.I.P.D About?
In the movie “R.I.P.D.”, directed by Robert Schwentke who’s known for his work on “The Divergent Series”, we find Ryan Reynolds teaming up with Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, and Marisa Miller. Jeff Bridges plays Roicephus “Roy” Pulsipher, a seasoned Old West lawman leading the mysterious Rest in Peace Development – an elite police force that tracks down sinister spirits masquerading as ordinary people to avoid being judged, and instead remain among the living. With his partner Nick Walker (Reynolds), a Boston police detective, Roy discovers a plot that could potentially wipe out all life, prompting them to take action to preserve the cosmic balance or risk unleashing angry souls from the afterlife upon an unsuspecting humanity.
Looking back at his career, Ryan Reynolds feels more positively towards the comic book roles that didn’t quite hit the mark initially, such as his debut as Deadpool in 2009, where the character famously had his mouth sewn shut. However, he fondly remembers how his friendship with Hugh Jackman, his co-star in Deadpool and Wolverine, began during the filming of that movie. Reynolds has also acknowledged that despite making fun of it throughout the years, he now appreciates that initial Deadpool appearance. Reynolds is rumored to return as Wade Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point. There are speculations about his involvement in upcoming projects such as the next two Avengers sequels, Doomsday and Infinity War. He has also hinted at possibly appearing in a separate project, dropping subtle clues through media interviews.
Fans can stream R.I.P.D. via Prime Video.
