Ryan Reynolds’ Biggest Flop? You Won’t Believe What’s Happening Now!
Currently, Ryan Reynolds is raking in billions at the box office due to his portrayal of Deadpool. However, this wasn’t always so. In fact, the MCU star once led a comic book action movie to a catastrophic flop at the box office back in 2013. Remarkably, that box office disaster is now gaining popularity on streaming platforms.
The movie R.I.P.D., originally titled R.I.P.D.: Rest in Peace Department, was directed by Robert Schwentke and written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, inspired by the 1999 comic book “R.I.P.D.” by Peter M. Lenkov. The film is headlined by Ryan Reynolds, with Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, Stéphanie Szostak, and Marisa Miller in supporting roles. Initially, the action-comedy received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences upon its release. However, it seems that there’s been a resurgence of interest in the film, as R.I.P.D. has recently moved up to the #3 spot on certain streaming platforms, following closely behind Jason Statham’s action thriller Homefront and the mystery comedy sequel Another Simple Favor.
Back in the day, the movie R.I.P.D. was a significant flop at the box office, earning only $78.3 million compared to its hefty budget of $150 million. But here’s the twist – Ryan Reynolds and action enthusiasts are finding themselves drawn to it now, questioning if the comic book adaptation is truly as dreadful as everyone said. As you weigh whether your curiosity is peaked enough, take a look at the official synopsis shared below.
Experienced police officer Roy Pulsifer, portrayed by Jeff Bridges, serves in the R.I.P.D., an esteemed law enforcement agency tasked with identifying and apprehending malevolent spirits who have taken on human forms to evade their ultimate judgment. Partnered with rookie officer Nick Walker, played by Ryan Reynolds, Roy and his team stumble upon a plot that could lead to the destruction of all life. In order to prevent this catastrophe and maintain cosmic balance, they must find a solution to send these angry spirits back to their rightful place or risk seeing them return to the world of the living through a portal to the afterlife.
‘R.I.P.D.’ Got a Prequel Back in 2022
Personally, I must confess that the supernatural action flick, R.I.P.D., didn’t quite hit the mark for me or many others. Despite Jeff Bridges’ captivating portrayal of an undead Wild West sheriff, which brought some entertaining moments to the table, the film fell flat with both critics and viewers.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it garnered a mere 13% approval rating from critics based on 103 reviews, while audience feedback on Popcornmeter was only slightly better at 38%. The general consensus among reviewers seems to be that the movie is too simplistic and predictable to fully satisfy.
Although you may find it intriguing, t it flopped upon release.
