Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series, titled “American Love Story,” continues to provoke discussion, as it delves into the stormy love affair between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
The children of the former president, who sadly passed away along with his stunning spouse in a plane accident near Martha’s Vineyard in 1999 at ages 38 and 33, have remained a focus of widespread interest for years.
In spite of strong criticism from Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.’s nephew, who accused Murphy of exploiting his uncle’s legacy in a disturbing manner, the 59-year-old producer seems resolute about creating a drama that highlights the most notorious events involving Kennedy and himself.
This week, actors Paul Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon were seen reenacting one of their heated public disputes, which took place in 1996 at Washington Square Park and was captured on film, later making headlines in newspapers.
In the fresh photos, Pidgeon adopts Bessette’s renowned minimalistic aesthetic, donning a cozy cream cable-knit sweater, black leggings, and thick white sneakers. To top it off, she casually slings a navy jacket around her midriff.
Kelly, playing the role of JFK Jr., adopts the casual sportswear style he was known for, donning a taupe zip-up sweater, red striped shorts, and white sneakers.
The re-enactment mirrors the original photos, depicting Bessette appearing noticeably angry while forcefully pushing her husband, who is attempting to grab her arm.
Reports at the time even alleged he attempted to tug off her engagement ring mid-fight.
Through carefully crafted scenes, Murphy is emphasizing that the television series “American Love Story” will not avoid depicting the authentic, turbulent interactions between the central couple.
This is likely to stir up Schlossberg, as he has publicly claimed that Murphy is attempting to capitalize financially on one of Schlossberg’s numerous personal tragedies, which some consider inappropriate.
Murphy, on his end, brushed off the criticism, stating that it seemed peculiar to get upset over a “relative one hardly remembers,” likely referring to Schlossberg.

I recall serving as the ring bearer at his wedding and the day he unfortunately passed away. I also remember Wyclef [Jean] performing at his funeral. Other memories have been shared through stories, such as the incident where he found himself locked out of a car in an intersection and asked the irate driver for a golf club to break the window and retrieve his keys, which he then proceeded to do.
In a similar fashion as previous times, Schlossberg challenged Murphy for reportedly not contributing any proceeds from American Love Story towards organizations associated with the Kennedy family.
He was angered by the fact that you’ve amassed a fortune from John and have chosen to flaunt it publicly, yet refuse to donate any of your wealth towards the causes he advocated for or the public service legacy he embodied.
Schlossberg was just six years old when his uncle’s tragic death captivated the nation.
In June, he criticized Murphy publicly for not involving the family in his decisions regarding the series’ planning, following Murphy’s posting of backstage pictures from the Ryan Murphy Productions Instagram account that documented camera tests.
The storyline of American Love Story, as reported by Deadline, revolves around a once-beautiful marriage between a young, well-known couple often referred to as America’s royalty. However, their relationship starts to unravel under the intense scrutiny and self-focused gaze of tabloid news outlets.
The investigation will delve into the stresses they faced in their professional lives and the alleged familial disagreements, as well as their untimely demise when a private aircraft they were traveling in crashed into the ocean on a misty summer evening along the coast of Massachusetts.
In 1992, Carolyn, daughter of the deceased 35th President John F. Kennedy (John Sr.) and his wife Jackie, had her initial encounter. This happened during a time when she was romantically involved with actress Daryl Hannah.
Two years on, he and Bessette embarked on a romance that drew continuous media attention.
1995 saw their engagement, and the following September of 1996 witnessed a private, candlelit wedding ceremony on Cumberland Island, Georgia, where they exchanged vows.
After their wedding, the media attention on them intensified even more. Regrettably, three years down the line, a tragic event occurred.
Tragically, on the 16th of July in 1999, Carolyn, John Jr., and his sister Lauren lost their lives in a plane crash near Martha’s Vineyard.
The investigators determined that Kennedy had lost command over the plane, and five days afterward, their remains were found in the Atlantic Ocean.
