Ryan Murphy says his show about an STD that turns you hot is “Game of Thrones in its scale”
As a seasoned gamer of pop culture, I find Ryan Murphy’s latest venture, “The Beauty,” to be a fascinating addition to his already impressive portfolio. His knack for tackling taboo subjects with finesse and intrigue is undeniable, and this new show seems no exception. The comparison to “Game of Thrones” in terms of scale and production value piques my curiosity, although I must admit the lack of dragons might be a letdown for some fans.
Ryan Murphy, a prominent figure in Hollywood, is one of the most successful mega-producers, known for creating series such as Glee, American Horror Story, Dahmer, 9-1-1, among others. He continues to innovate and push boundaries with his latest announcements: Doctor Odyssey, Grotesquerie, and The Beauty. To put it simply, The Beauty is a show about a sexually transmitted disease that makes you incredibly attractive…but ultimately proves fatal. As Murphy explained to Variety, “It’s something I’ve never done before – a sci-fi medical series centered around a new virus that mutates and is sexually transmitted, transforming individuals into their absolute ideal selves.” The show delves into the question of how far one would go for beauty, what sacrifices they might make, and whether those matters in the face of such transformation. Murphy refers to this theme as the “Ozempic culture,” where a single dose can lead to improved appearance and feelings, but raises questions about one’s true motivations and underlying issues.
Ozempic is a widely-used medication for weight loss, but its long-term effects are still unknown. It’s hard to believe that those who benefit from it would be pleased with Murphy comparing it to an STD that ultimately proves fatal after causing feverishness. However, such comments probably don’t faze Murphy much; he’s recently found himself in a dispute over his latest drama about the infamous Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik. At this point, criticism seems to roll off him like water off a duck’s back.
Remarkably, Murphy draws a parallel between “The Beauty” and a highly successful series from the past decade, HBO’s “Game of Thrones”. Contrary to popular belief, there are no dragons involved; rather, he’s referring to the grandeur of the production. In essence, it’s quite dissimilar. It’s filmed in Europe – Venice, Rome, and Paris. The budget is substantial, almost as expansive as “Game of Thrones” in scope.
One of Murphy’s notable skills as a producer lies in maintaining relatively low production costs, which likely contributes to his success in getting many projects approved. It remains intriguing to see whether The Beauty, set to air on FX at an undetermined time, will gain enough popularity to warrant the investment. The show is expected to feature stars such as Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos, and Ashton Kutcher; it may attempt to persuade audiences that these actors aren’t already attractive before they contract a fictional STD that supposedly makes them even more appealing.
