As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for social justice and a deep appreciation for the transformative power of storytelling, I find myself both intrigued and moved by Kim Kardashian’s unexpected role as an advocate for the Menendez brothers. Her journey into prison reform, sparked by a Netflix series, is a testament to the potency of media in igniting change and sparking conversations that matter.

Kim Kardashian took up the cause of two individuals serving time for murder, having been inspired by the Netflix show “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

The influencer, aged 44, who chose to resendence the brothers following approximately 35 years in prison, gave the men, previously convicted of murdering their parents, an opportunity for redemption.

Ryan Murphy, aged 58 and the creator of the series, elaborated on Kim Kardashian’s part in providing an opportunity for the men to gain their freedom.

Approximately a month prior to its release on September 21st, Kim Kardashian requested to view my work, and I happily agreed, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

He clarified that she’s not just a friend, but someone deeply passionate about prison reform. Immediately, she dove right in.

Following the broadcast of the series depicting the incidents preceding the August 1989 murder of Kitty and Jose Menendez in their Beverly Hills residence, viewers started reaching out to California law enforcement agencies as well.

Murphy stated during the Netflix FYC event held in Los Angeles on November 2 that both his office and the DA’s were inundated with numerous reactions from people expressing strong opinions about the show.

According to Murphy, the main intention behind the show was to present diverse complex perspectives.

I found the portrayal of addressing and questioning sexual abuse to be incredibly impactful.” This is in reference to the brothers’ argument that they were subjected to sexual abuse by their father.

In their initial case, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision, resulting in a hung jury. However, during a subsequent trial, they were found guilty and given a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Murphy commented, “Regardless of one’s feelings, there’s been a significant shift among the youth. They’re eager to discuss certain topics now, which were not open for discussion back in 1989.

The executive producer pointed out that it doesn’t matter if you accept their views or not, as his intention was to spark discussions on that particular subject through the series.

People found it quite captivating, leading many to express their views following its broadcast. The subsequent discussions were incredibly intriguing.

Kardashian went so far as to write an essay calling for the brothers to be released.

She wrote that she had spent time with Lyle and Erik; they are not the stereotypical monstrous figures, but rather gentle, insightful, and truthful individuals.

‘Behind bars, their behavior has always been impeccable. Not only have they attained several university degrees, but they’ve also provided care for the elderly prisoners in the hospice wing and served as guides in educational programs, consistently dedicated to helping others.’

LA District Attorney George Gascón has stated that he intends to propose a revised sentence of 50 years to life, which might allow them to be considered for parole as juvenile offenders. At the time the crimes were perpetrated, Erik was 18 and Lyle was 21.

If the judge adopts Gascón’s proposal during the hearing on December 11, the subsequent action will be a hearing with the California Parole Board. As reported by CBS affiliate KFMB, a decision might take up to six months.

Should the Parole Board vote for release, that decision would land on Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk, granting him up to 150 days to make his final call.

An alternative scenario is a scheduled habeas corpus hearing on November 26th. During this court appearance, the lawyers for the Menendez family intend to present arguments in favor of admitting certain pieces of evidence. This includes a letter describing instances of sexual abuse prior to the killings, as well as an affidavit from former associate Roy Rosselló claiming that Jose Menendez raped him.

The defense team has also submitted a petition for clemency to Governor Newsom.
