Ryan Libbey Confesses Struggling as ‘Modern Dad’ Earning Less Than Fiancee
In my own words, I acknowledge the challenges I face as a modern-day father, earning less than my partner, Louise Thompson.
Previously from Made in Chelsea, the 34-year-old man openly shared his concerns about potentially transitioning into a full-time caregiver role should his job opportunities decrease.
In the most recent installment of their podcast, He Said, She Said, the previous television personality and part-time fitness instructor voiced his apprehensions.
He clarified that he’s currently in a challenging phase, struggling with self-appreciation and contentment about his identity and current activities. On certain days, he feels as though things aren’t going smoothly for him – they seem stuck or stagnant, not advancing the way he would like them to.
‘It’s been a very quiet start to 2025 on the work front for Ryan – and it’s panicked me.’
Ryan, residing in London alongside Louise, aged 35, and their three-year-old son Leo, expressed concerns about deciding on suitable career paths.

He currently describes himself as a digital marketer and podcaster who ‘works with brands’.
In conversation with Louise, he mentioned: “I’m comfortable with your role as the primary income earner – I admire it and I’ll stand by you – but if I can adopt a more laid-back approach to this situation… given today’s progressive fatherhood… I believe that’s the category I find myself in.
Over the last several weeks, there have been instances when I feel as if I’m reaching my limit; moments where I consider stepping back from my responsibilities and embracing a more domestic role instead. This could involve me handling household chores such as cooking, grocery shopping, and even attempting DIY projects on occasion.
Since Louise earns significantly more than me and excels in managing business matters, it might be advantageous for us to divide our responsibilities: she handles the business aspects, while I take care of the other tasks.
‘But then I think, I’ve got lots to offer as well. I just need to figure out how to press go.’
In a few days prior to his participation, Ryan openly admitted that he was about to embark on the Marathon des Sables in Morocco – an arduous nine-day challenge which he initiated last Sunday and is scheduled to conclude by the following Monday.
He expressed his feelings by saying, “Even as I run this race through the desert, I question myself, ‘What on earth am I doing here?’ My purpose seems to elude me.
He added that being ill recently triggered this blow to his mental health and outlook on life.

Ryan expressed that he had a total breakdown. He was overwhelmed with unproductive thoughts and questioning everything – from his professional path and its future, to his absence of clarity and commitment in making decisions.
Over the last fortnight, bothersome thoughts have persistently surfaced, causing significant difficulties for me.
‘I’ve considered starting therapy again because I feel the lowest I’ve felt for a long time.
I feel an urge to grow beyond my current self. Currently, I find myself filled with doubts, uncertainties, and questions about the areas of my professional life that aren’t working as smoothly as they should.
He mentioned: ‘I observe you, not out of envy, but I notice the achievements you’ve made – as well as Sam [Thompson]’s – and it seems that similar success isn’t coming my way, and I’m uncertain about how to address this situation.’
