Early reviews are calling Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi film, Project Hail Mary, a “masterpiece.” It’s currently his best-reviewed movie, surpassing even popular films like La La Land and Drive.
The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the team behind the Spider-Verse movies. It’s based on the 2021 science fiction novel of the same name by Andy Weir, who also wrote The Martian. Drew Goddard, who previously adapted The Martian into a critically acclaimed screenplay (and received an Oscar nomination in 2015), wrote the screenplay for this film as well.
Featuring Sandra Hüller of Anatomy of a Fall, the movie centers on astronaut Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) who wakes up on a spaceship with complete amnesia – he has no idea who he is or how he ended up there.

Realizing he’s likely the only person left from a mission sent to the Tau Ceti system to rescue Earth, Ryland is determined to do everything he can to save the planet, using his science background and quick thinking. As he gets back to work, he discovers he has some company – a surprising new friend named Rocky, who happens to be an alien.
Sandra Hüller plays Eva Stratt, the demanding boss of Ryland and the leader of the Hail Mary mission. The film also features performances by Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Liz Kingsman, and Milana Vayntrub.

After its London premiere on March 9th, the movie Project Hail Mary earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 95% of the first 110 reviews being positive. This score could shift as more reviews are published closer to the film’s wider release.
Okay, so I’ve been checking Rotten Tomatoes, and this new sci-fi movie is blowing everything else Ryan Gosling’s done out of the water! It’s got an almost perfect score right now, which is higher than even Drive (which was at 93%) and both La La Land and The Nice Guys – they’re both sitting at 91%. Seriously, it’s his best-reviewed movie ever according to the site!

The film is receiving rave reviews, with many calling it a cinematic masterpiece. Critics particularly highlight Ryan Gosling’s performance as exceptional and are hailing it as a groundbreaking science fiction film, potentially the best of 2026 (according to Mama’s Geeky and ComicBook.com).
Like many stories about lone heroes – such as the character Matt Damon plays in The Martian – Project Hail Mary has drawn mixed reactions. Some, like the South China Morning Post, found it too similar to other works, calling it “disappointingly derivative,” while others, such as Mashable, praised it as a fun and inventive combination of ideas.
I’m so excited! “Project Hail Mary” is finally hitting UK cinemas on March 19th, and even better, there are preview screenings on the 14th and 15th! I’m already planning which showing I’m going to.
