Ryan Gosling’s New Sci-Fi Epic Movie Based On Andy Weir’s Novel Breaks His 15-Year Rotten Tomatoes Record

Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary is officially out of this world.

The new sci-fi movie, based on Andy Weir’s book, tells the story of astronaut Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling). He wakes up with no memory and discovers he’s on a critical, one-way trip to save the Sun from a strange microbe. During his journey, he forms an unlikely friendship with an alien named Rocky, and together they work to save both their worlds.

I’m so excited for Project Hail Mary! After the first 59 reviews came in, it landed a fantastic 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. If it stays that high, it’ll be Ryan Gosling’s best-reviewed movie ever, even beating out Drive, which had been his top film for 15 years with a 93% rating. And it’s amazing that it’s doing even better than Andy Weir’s other adaptation, The Martian, which scored 91% – this is huge!

In a review for ScreenRant, Gregory Nussen praised Project Hail Mary as a “remarkable achievement,” highlighting its “sharp and cogent poetry” and the powerful message that human connection is essential for life. He specifically called Ryan Gosling’s performance his best work yet, noting his incredible charisma. The film successfully captures much of the joy found in the original novel and earned a fantastic score of 9 out of 10 stars.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, were also involved with Project Hail Mary, with Drew Goddard writing the script. The film’s supporting actors include Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.

Project Hail Mary will be released in theaters on March 20, 2026.
