Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi based on “masterpiece” confirms epic runtime ahead of cinema release

After a fantastic trailer, Project Hail Mary is generating a lot of excitement and is already being called a potential frontrunner for the best film of 2026. Now, it’s official: the sci-fi movie, coming to theaters next month, will be quite long!

The Irish Film Classification Office has confirmed that Project Hail Mary is a lengthy film, clocking in at 2 hours and 36 minutes – specifically, 156 minutes and 26 seconds.

The film has received a 12A rating in Ireland due to moderate science fiction violence, injury, and some disturbing content. We anticipate a similar rating from the BBFC for UK cinemas, but it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

What to Read Next

A moving final trailer for the upcoming movie debuted during the Super Bowl weekend, and you can watch it here. Like the first trailer, it’s generated a lot of excitement among fans of the original book by Andy Weir that the movie is based on.

One reader called the book a masterpiece, predicting it’s ‘something incredibly special.’ Another shared their enthusiasm, saying they immediately felt the urge to quote passages and wished they could connect with everyone else who felt the same way.

If you haven’t read it yet, Project Hail Mary is about Ryland Grace, a science teacher played by Ryan Gosling, who is tasked with figuring out why the sun is fading and how to save it.

Ryland will need to rely on his expertise and try some unusual approaches to prevent Earth from being wiped out. Luckily, he’ll have help – he unexpectedly befriends an alien named Rocky, portrayed by James Ortiz.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the movie, which was written by Drew Goddard. The cast includes Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.

You can see Project Hail Mary in theaters and IMAX starting March 19th. Early showings will be available on Saturday, March 14th and Sunday, March 15th.
