Ryan Gosling’s cult sci-fi sequel gets new UK streaming home

Ryan Gosling’s cult sci-fi Blade Runner 2049 has landed a new streaming home in the UK.

35 years after the initial film, the eagerly anticipated sequel hit screens in 2017, featuring Harrison Ford reprising his character as Rick Deckard once more.

For the following 29 days, UK viewers will have the opportunity to stream the recently aired movie on BBC iPlayer, as it was broadcasted on BBC One yesterday (21st January).

The movie is also still available to watch for free on Prime Video for subscribers.

In the role of director for Blade Runner 2049 stepped Denis Villeneuve, who had previously worked on Dune. However, despite receiving positive reviews, the film ended up being a financial disappointment at the box office.

In addition to Gosling and Ford, the film also stars Ana de Armas from No Time to Die, Robin Wright known for House of Cards, Dave Bautista famous for his roles in Marvel productions, as well as Mackenzie Davis, who has appeared in Black Mirror.

The latest installment of the “Blade Runner” franchise, titled “Blade Runner 2099“, is being developed by Amazon at present. It features Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh portraying a replicant character named Olwen.

In addition to the lineup, the series will include actress Hunter Schafer from “Euphoria”, and Ridley Scott, the original director of “Blade Runner”, is set to serve as one of the executive producers. Moreover, Silka Luisa has been appointed as the showrunner for this project.

As a gamer, I was all geared up for an exciting adventure set in the lush landscapes of Northern Ireland. However, that dream was dashed around a year back when the 2023 actor’s strike put a halt to those plans.

Additionally to the two films and a forthcoming television program, the Blade Runner universe was revisited in 2021 with an animated show titled Black Lotus. This series is set in the year 2032 and boasts the vocal talents of Jessica Henwick from Glass Onion and Brian Cox from Succession.

You can currently stream “Blade Runner 2049” in the UK on both BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime Video. As for “Blade Runner 2099,” unfortunately, there’s no confirmed release date as of now.
