Ryan Gosling halts LA event to praise Eva Mendes’ brother as ‘the hardest-working nonworking actor I have ever met’ as he issues plea to directors and writers in crowd to ‘hire this man!’

He’s already an Oscar-nominated actor, a gifted singer and a talented dancer.

Ryan Gosling recently went above and beyond for his family, stepping in to help his brother-in-law find acting work during a public event in Los Angeles. It seems he’s added ‘publicist’ and ‘agent’ to his already impressive list of talents!

The 45-year-old actor was at an event for his new movie, Project Hail Mary, but he surprised everyone by using his time to highlight the work of Eva Mendes’ brother, Carlos Mendez.

Carlos, like his older sister, followed his passion for acting. As a child, he was captivated by Harrison Ford’s performance as Indiana Jones, which sparked his interest in the field.

Starting his acting career in 1995, he’s appeared in more than 80 films and TV shows, including popular series like Parks and Recreation, 90210, and Dexter: Original Sin. However, he hasn’t achieved the same level of success as his well-known brother-in-law.

Ryan used his recent film event to publicly ask movie studio heads to give Carlos a role in an upcoming project. He described Carlos as ‘the most dedicated actor I know who isn’t currently working’.

A TikTok video shows actor Ryan Gosling briefly stopping the event’s host to ask someone in the audience – his brother-in-law, Carlos – to stand up and be recognized.

Okay, so things got a little awkward when Carlos stumbled, but I quickly jumped in to re-engage the audience. I started by asking a simple question: ‘Let’s see a show of hands – who here is a director? Now, producers? And finally, any writers in the room?’ It’s a great way to connect with people and understand who I’m speaking to – a little audience participation always helps!

This is Carlos Mendez, Eva Mendes’ brother. He’s the most dedicated actor I know, even though he doesn’t currently have a traditional acting job.

The Barbie actress enthusiastically praised Carlos’ skills and dedication, and then pleaded with the audience to give him a job, saying he truly earned the opportunity.

The crowd roared with approval as he went on, saying, ‘Someone get this man’s contact information! If you’re working on a project – writing a script, directing a film – cast him in it. He’s incredibly talented, and let’s be honest, very good-looking too. He absolutely deserves a chance.’

The TikTok user shared a funny video online and joked, ‘It turns out Ryan Gosling is the biggest fan – and promoter – of my brother-in-law!’

Carlos has talked about how difficult it’s been to succeed as an actor, and he’s stated before that he doesn’t want to ask his sister, Eva, for any special treatment or help.

He told Fox5 New York last February that even after 16 or 17 years of work, he still has a lot to learn and accomplish.

I focus on enjoying the process, because every experience and accomplishment helps me grow as an actor and fuels my ambition.

In a recent interview with the Boston Herald, he admitted that succeeding in Hollywood is challenging. He explained that, like most actors, he’s experienced both good times and setbacks throughout his career.

Work in this industry is unpredictable – you can be very busy, then suddenly have no work at all. It’s highly competitive, so you really have to stay dedicated and keep pushing forward.

Okay, seriously, who would have guessed Ryan Gosling would be this enthusiastic about his sister-in-law Eva Mendes’ co-star’s movie?! I’m seeing all the hype for ‘Project Hail Mary’ and it’s adorable how he’s basically become its biggest fan and promoter! It’s so sweet to see him supporting her colleague’s work like that – a true family man!

He maintained that having a famous sister, Eva, doesn’t give him any special advantages. He explained that people usually don’t realize they’re related unless they notice they share a last name.

I can chat with her about anything, but I keep our business separate. I want to succeed on my own merits and don’t want to rely on anyone for help or special treatment. I’m focused on proving what I can do independently.

You know, I’ve always said family is everything, and that really shines through with Carlos. He’s absolutely smitten with Eva and Ryan’s daughters, Esmeralda, who’s eleven, and Amada, nine. He’s consistently told me what incredible parents Eva and Ryan are, and it’s lovely to see that strong family connection.

In a 2024 interview with E! News, he described how well the team connects with the young women, noting they genuinely seek their opinions by asking things like, ‘What are your thoughts on this?’ and ‘What do you think of that?’ He praised them as being fantastic at building rapport.

He doesn’t plan on having children in the near future, as he’s currently prioritizing his acting career.

He admitted that raising children seems like a huge responsibility. While he’s open to having kids someday, he’s not actively planning for it right now. He joked that with actors like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino becoming fathers later in life, he doesn’t feel rushed. He wants to focus on building his career before starting a family.

Ryan recently shared that his daughters played a role in the clothing choices he made for characters in his novel, Project Hail Mary.

He plays a middle school science teacher in a fun, sci-fi movie who teams up with an alien to save the sun – and the world – from being destroyed.

Ryan, who also produced the movie, explained that he and Eva often search for films they can enjoy with their children and create lasting memories with, but those kinds of movies are rare. He said they decided to create the film themselves because they couldn’t find what they were looking for.

You know, it’s funny – I recently read that one of the actor’s daughters actually convinced him to wear glasses for the role! He shared that little tidbit in an interview with USA Today – it’s always lovely to hear about those personal touches that make a performance even more special, don’t you think?

He remembered experimenting with the character and putting on glasses, at which point his daughter said, “You look smarter with glasses!”

The star responded with a polite, “Thank you very much. I plan to wear these in the movie. I appreciate you letting me know,”

Ryan said his children have provided a lot of feedback throughout the process. He specifically mentioned Esmeralda and Amada, calling them his toughest critics, but also acknowledging they’re usually right and have been incredibly helpful.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for directing popular animated films like The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, also directed this film.

The movie ‘Project Hail Mary,’ which is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 book, came out in theaters last Friday and has received very positive reviews, earning a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I was so touched when I heard Ryan talk about why he made ‘Project Hail Mary.’ He shared in an interview that he really wanted to create a film the whole family could enjoy – something he would want to watch with his daughters. He said he felt incredibly lucky to have been able to bring that vision to life, and honestly, it makes me love the movie even more knowing that personal connection.

He explained that his children have watched many versions of his work and provide him with detailed feedback. He values their opinions above all others, noting they’re always honest and aren’t afraid to offer criticism.

Ryan and Eva first connected in 2011 while working together on the movie The Place Beyond the Pines, a crime thriller that also starred Bradley Cooper and Ray Liotta.

They’re a rare and enduring Hollywood couple who have intentionally kept their relationship private.

Despite Eva calling Ryan her ‘husband’ in public, they’ve never actually confirmed if they are legally married.
