Ryan Dorsey Breaks Silence on Naya Rivera’s Tragic Drowning Five Years Later

Almost five years have passed since the unfortunate accidental drowning death of Naya Rivera, aged 33, and her former spouse, Ryan Dorsey, finds it difficult to view photographs of her, as he continues to bear a heavy sense of guilt for not saving her on that tragic day.

In a conversation with People on Wednesday, I shared my thoughts, saying, “Had circumstances allowed, I believe I would have leapt into action, striving to make a difference and potentially turn the tide.

However, it also occurs to me that some unfortunate incident might have befallen us both. I’m unsure about this.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: Nine-year-old Josey Hollis Dorsey, son of Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey, still carries the weight of guilt from their tragic incident on Lake Piru. At just four years old, he was unable to save his mother when their unsecured pontoon boat drifted away, leaving her exhausted in the water as she struggled to get him back aboard.

Ryan remembered saying, “She mentioned his name right before she sank, and I lost sight of her after that. It’s utterly heart-wrenching for him to have been there when she took her final breath.

He repeatedly mentioned his ordeal where he sought a life raft but hesitated to grab a rope due to a large spider on it. I continually comforted him, ‘Mate, the length of that rope wouldn’t have saved you anyway.’

It’s clear that the incident is deeply etched in his memory, as he believes he might have prevented it. I suspect she may have stumbled on some bushes – perhaps an alternative explanation is an unusual sensation coming from the dam. The whole thing was merely a random, unfortunate event.

Approximately 26 individuals are said to have tragically drowned in the 130-foot deep, man-made reservoir, notorious for its deceptive undercurrents and treacherous whirlpools.

In 2022, the case of wrongful death brought against Ventura County by Dorsey was settled confidentially. This was because the rental boat involved in the incident did not adhere to the necessary safety regulations.

Although Josey can’t fully heal from the devastating loss of his mom, we’re happy to learn that the financial compensation will provide him substantial support as he navigates life after this unfortunate event.

The actor who appeared on “On Call” recalled fainting at Ralph’s supermarket in Big Bear when they learned that Rivera had gone missing, and he sped at around 100 miles per hour over the 145 miles to Lake Piru to aid in the five-day search for her remains.

‘It was the worst five days of my life,’ Ryan recalled.

‘There was a fear, what if we don’t find her? It was just awful.’

Naya’s younger sister Nickayla later moved in with Dorsey and his son for about a year.

‘She was such a big help,’ the Chicago P.D. guest star said of their cohabitation.

During a five-month absence, I went to Vancouver, and in my final month, Josey joined me. Remarkably, while I was away, he managed to maintain stability and routine. At times, it felt strange because the way he spoke to Josey reminded me of his mother.

Raising an eyebrow, one might ponder over how Ryan’s three-year union with a former Glee cast member concluded in divorce back in 2018 following the dismissal of his domestic battery charges against her.

Dorsey plans on writing more about that ‘monumental disaster’ in his upcoming memoir.

The well-known pair, who first crossed paths in 2010, tied the knot in Cabo San Lucas on July 19, 2014, in a private ceremony attended by just 12 individuals. Remarkably, this was the same date that Naya Rivera had initially planned to wed her former fiancé Big Sean; however, their relationship ended before that could happen.

Over the last two years, Ryan has chosen to reside peacefully in his hometown of West Virginia. Meanwhile, young Josey has been engrossed in a variety of activities such as sports, violin tutelage, and acting in two productions at the Children’s Theatre of Charleston.

Dorsey shared that they compiled a memory book for Josey, which resides on his nightstand, and over the holidays, he was observed shedding tears while browsing through it.

You could simply comfort him with a warm embrace and say, “I understand that life isn’t always fair. Unfortunate events occur, often without any rhyme or reason, and all we can do is strive to be the best people we can be.

It’s challenging to clarify concepts that seem illogical, regardless of one’s age. I’m not particularly convinced by the notion that everything occurs for a purpose since I struggle to fathom a rationale behind someone lacking their mother.

Josey has been urging or insisting on getting a stepmother and a younger sibling from his father, and he’s now started seeing someone romantically.

‘I think I found someone that I do like,’ Ryan coyly said.

You know, it’s challenging to maintain a long-distance relationship when we live far away from each other. Asking someone to commit to both our lives isn’t simple, especially considering all the factors involved.

Dorsey is currently shooting an exceptionally exciting Apple TV+ series in Los Angeles. Before that, however, he’ll be returning to his enigmatic character, Frank Whales, in this coming Sunday’s episode of the highly popular CBS show Tracker, which goes by the title ‘The Disciple.’

The actor who appeared on Magnum P.I. expressed optimism, stating that he hasn’t had his major role as a regular cast member just yet, but is eagerly anticipating that opportunity to come soon.

‘As a sole parent, I’m the only income source for Josey. People might assume we’re wealthy due to my success and TV appearances, but they don’t understand our true financial state. Contrary to popular belief, we didn’t leave LA because we had piles of money stashed away.’

Apart from that, Ryan is equally influential; he collaborates with companies such as Happy Head, Soula, and Coors Light on sponsored partnerships.
