Ryan Coogler has revealed one thing he absolutely had to have happen before he’d direct the popular new film, Sinners. The movie stars Michael B. Jordan, a frequent collaborator of Coogler’s, as identical twins named Smoke and Stack. They return to their roots in Mississippi to launch a music venue, only to find it attacked by vampires on its opening night.
The cast of Sinners includes Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li, Jayme Lawson, and Omar Miller. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners has been a major success, earning widespread praise from critics. Remarkably, the R-rated horror film has taken in almost $368 million globally – a huge accomplishment for an original movie.

The upcoming film Sinners is predicted to be a major contender at the 2026 Oscars, almost certainly earning a Best Picture nomination. It’s also expected to be nominated for awards in categories like Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor, among others. While many aspects distinguish Sinners from other recent films, director Ryan Coogler has highlighted one element that was absolutely essential for him before committing to the Warner Bros. project.
In a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused, director Ryan Coogler explained that shooting Sinners on film was a top priority for him. Because of this choice, the movie is available in both Ultra Panavision 70mm and IMAX 70mm film formats. Coogler believes film provides a unique viewing experience, especially as most modern media is now digital.

The most important thing for me was shooting the project on film. We’re constantly bombarded with digital images these days, so film offers a different, more unique look and feel. It really stands out because we’re so accustomed to digital visuals.
As the 2026 Oscar nominations approach, “Sinners” is a strong contender for Best Cinematography. Its main competition is likely to be Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.” These two films are expected to compete closely in several categories, with Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet” also being considered a top movie this season.
After working together on films like Fruitvale Station, the Creed series, and Black Panther, Sinners feels like the ultimate expression of the collaboration between Coogler and Jordan. Its success is particularly noteworthy, as many well-made movies have had trouble attracting audiences in theaters since the pandemic began.
Ryan Coogler is set to direct both Black Panther 3 and a new version of The X-Files. Before those projects, however, Sinners will likely return to cinemas before the Oscars. This will give audiences another chance to experience the film’s stunning visuals and demonstrate why Coogler insisted on a particular creative condition – a condition that proved essential to the movie’s massive success.
