Ruth Wilson talks process transforming into a real public figure for first time

As a fan of riveting dramas and exceptional performances, I eagerly anticipate the premiere of “A Very Royal Scandal” on September 19 on Prime Video. The transformation of Ruth Wilson into Emily Maitlis promises to be a spectacle, with Wilson’s dedication to embodying Maitlis evident in her meticulous preparation.

In a recent discussion, actress Ruth Wilson revealed her preparations to portray Emily Maitlis in the forthcoming drama “A Very Royal Scandal“. This production recounts the BBC’s sensational Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew, who is played by Michael Sheen.

The actress from “The Woman in the Wall” met up with Maitlis, one of the executive producers of the Amazon Prime Video series, to ready herself for her debut portrayal of a real-life persona.

During an exclusive chat with Digital Spy prior to the series premiere, Wilson shared that to portray Maitlis, she adorned a charming blonde wig, brown contact lenses, and always painted her nails a steady shade of blue.

She mentioned it was enjoyable to work with and attempt to capture a unique and intriguing vocal tone she possesses.

Previously, I hadn’t worked with a genuine public figure like myself. Michael Sheen has taken on numerous such roles, but not me as extensively. That’s one of the main reasons why I accepted this task and the position.

The subject matter was complex and unfamiliar to me, but I found it engaging due to its structured nature. It’s fascinating how it offers clear boundaries, unlike the intricate subtleties of real people you encounter in everyday life.

Emily’s example made it thrilling to create something similar, as I wouldn’t have thought of it on my own.

As I eagerly dived into the preparation for the upcoming three-part miniseries, I found myself spending valuable hours in the studio where Maitlis records her podcast. This encounter was unique because it presented an opportunity for me to interview none other than Maitlis herself. She described this experience as the most petrifying thing she’s ever encountered.

Wilson chuckled, sharing that he had prepared a list of questions. He decided to catch her off guard from the start by asking about the contents of her handbag, an intriguing inquiry indeed. This led her to rummage through her belongings, but it turned out to be quite entertaining.

She is a remarkably giving individual, eager to contribute and willing to divulge her personal experiences. It requires significant trust from her for me to capture her spirit and select elements that I can incorporate into this character.

In essence, I’ve developed a portrayal of Emily that isn’t exactly her. Instead, it’s an amalgamation of Jeremy Brock’s writing, Julian Jarrold’s direction, my own contributions, and the authenticity Emily brought to the role. She graciously shared her time and energy with us, and the insights I gained were incredibly valuable.
