As a gamer with a heart for British comedy, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of Gavin & Stacey for years. Being a fan since its debut, I can confidently say that the Christmas special this year promises to be an unexpected delight. The teaser from Ruth Jones about the finale not being what we expect has me intrigued and on the edge of my seat!
Gavin & Stacey‘s Ruth Jones has teased the unexpected in this year’s Christmas special.
On Christmas Day at 9pm, the cherished BBC comedy makes its comeback on BBC One with a brand-new holiday special, marking five years since the 2019 Christmas installment was aired.
In a recent conversation with the Big Issue, the actor from Nessa and the series’ co-creator hinted that the upcoming special could deviate somewhat from audience expectations.
As a gamer myself, let me warn you all, this ending isn’t going to be the one you’re anticipating. Trust me, there won’t be any sequel to this game.
James Corden, who plays Co-creator and Smithy, also shared his thoughts about the special. He said, “On Christmas Day, viewers will witness the conclusion of a 20-year romantic tale. I hope it demonstrates, among other things, that love can be confusing and messy, and it’s something that everyone experiences.
During that very same chat, Jones and Corden reminisced about the process of creating ‘Gavin and Stacey‘ and shared that its initial idea was something entirely different.
Corden pondered, “It wasn’t ‘Gavin & Stacey’ quite yet,” he mused. Instead, it was a one-time special named “It’s My Day“. We crafted a personal backstory for ourselves to understand the characters and how they all became acquainted.
Speaking of that moment, I was the best man, Kyle, while Ruth was set to be the bride. Now, let me ask you, Jones, wasn’t there a time when they shared a secluded spot – perhaps it was an alleyway where they found themselves together? Or was it that she got unwell instead?
Jones and Corden first crossed paths during their collaboration on ITV’s show “Fat Friends”. It was during their stay at a hotel bar in Leeds that the concept for “It’s My Day” occurred to them.
That evening, it turned out only me and another person were present, as recalled by Corden. If any other cast member had stepped out for a bite, like a club sandwich, our conversation likely wouldn’t have happened.
For this month, the BBC unveiled a sneak peek of the eagerly awaited Christmas special. In it, Corden, Jones, Mathew Horne (as Gavin) and Joanna Page (playing Stacey) replicated the original artwork from the first series, which was created 17 years ago.
The outline for the upcoming special is out now, featuring the Shipmans and Wests celebrating Christmas in Essex, where Pamela takes charge as the main host for the holiday festivities.
In the photos from filming, both a wedding and what seems like a funeral have been suggested, but Corden has remained tight-lipped about it. Back in October, he cryptically said, “Was there a funeral? Perhaps yes, perhaps no…
