Ruth Jones reveals ‘serious’ gun training made her feel ‘powerful’ as she describes the gruelling preparation behind her Run Away role

Ruth Jones underwent extensive gun training for her latest role in the popular Netflix series, Run Away, and found the experience empowering.

Ruth Jones, known for playing Nessa in Gavin & Stacey, looked very different as she took on the role of Elena Ravenscroft, a clever and determined private investigator.

The Welsh actress talked about the intense training she underwent to prepare for her latest role, revealing it was the first time she’d ever held a gun while filming.

She told Radio Times they received thorough and serious training, which was appropriate given the importance of the task.

‘I’d be lying if I said that it didn’t make me feel like a little bit kind of powerful onscreen.’

The comedian shared a story about filming a flashback scene with a shootout in an old factory, calling it a surprisingly amazing experience.

‘I was gobsmacked at how many people were involved in setting up a scene like that

I found out what a ‘squib’ is – it’s a special effect used to create the sound and look of gunfire, including the way bullets seem to ricochet off things.

She explained that she needed lessons on how to use a blank-firing gun, as it was a completely new experience for her. She also mentioned that the guns were surprisingly loud!

The thriller, featuring Ruth and James Nesbitt, premiered on the streaming service on New Year’s Day and quickly earned a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This series is adapted from Harlan Coben’s 2019 novel. It centers on Simon (played by James), whose life is thrown into chaos when his daughter, Paige (Ellie de Lange), disappears.

Oh my gosh, you HAVE to know, his books have already been turned into SO many amazing shows! Like, I was completely hooked on ‘Fool Me Once’ on Netflix – seriously, I binged it in a day! And ‘The Stranger’ was just as good! Plus, ‘Lazarus’ over on Prime Video? Another masterpiece adapted from his work. I’m obsessed with everything he writes, and seeing it come to life on screen is just… incredible!

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, fans have shared their praise at the new series.

Someone commented that this was the first Harlan Coben adaptation they truly enjoyed.

Someone else commented that the show is a bit crazy and will probably keep people watching, but it doesn’t quite feel completely satisfying.

A third penned: ‘If you’ve enjoyed previous Harlan Coben adaptations, you should love this one.’

The popular series features Alfred Enoch, known for his role in Harry Potter, as detective Isaac Fagbenle, working with his colleague Ruby Todd, played by Amy Gledhill.

Minnie Driver joins the cast as Ingrid, Simon’s wife, and Annette Badland, a celebrated British actress, will play a discreet IT specialist who assists Elena.
