A fresh Hulu documentary is going to delve into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the filming location of “Rust”.
On October 21st, 2021, Alec Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun on the movie set in New Mexico. Regrettably, this live round led to the death of Halyna Hutchins, who was 42 years old, and injured director Joel Souza. The upcoming documentary titled “Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna” will delve into the lesser-known human experiences from the perspective of those present on set, as suggested by a press release.

Film Camerawoman Halyna Hutchins tragically lost her life on the filming location of “Rust” back in October 2021. However, a court ruled to drop the involuntary manslaughter charges against actor Alec Baldwin in July 2024.
Under the direction and production of Rachel Mason, known for her work on “Circus of Books” and “Singularity Song,” this movie will skillfully combine eyewitness testimonies and unveil exclusive behind-the-scenes content from “Rust.” Additionally, it will incorporate court records and materials from Hutchins’ personal archives.
Mason expressed in a statement that Halyna held great significance for him. In the whirlwind of media attention following her passing, it seemed like Halyna was overshadowed, her loss drowned by the surrounding conflicts. Our film endeavors to keep Halyna at the forefront, providing a glimpse into the experiences of those who were with her during her last 12 days. It’s our hope that through their efforts, we can present an incomplete yet vivid portrait of Halyna to the world.
Last year, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the “Rust” movie’s armorer, faced charges for involuntary manslaughter due to her involvement in an accidental fatal shooting incident. Currently, she is serving a 18-month prison sentence. However, Baldwin’s criminal case was dropped in July as fresh doubts emerged about the way law enforcement managed the evidence.

The movie debuted on a global stage for the first time in November, during the EnergaCamerimage international film festival held in Poland. A subsequent panel discourse recognized Hutchins’ significant role in the production of this film.
Born in Ukraine, Hutchins later pursued a master’s degree in international journalism from Kyiv National University. Additionally, she attended the American Film Institute and was distinguished as one of American Cinematographer’s Emerging Talents of 2019.
