Russell T Davies “delighted to honour” late Doctor Who star with heartfelt tribute
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has shared a heartfelt tribute to late actress Kate O’Mara.
Back in 1985, I dove into the world of Doctor Who and took on the role of none other than the original Rani, the rogue Time Lord. Facing off against The Doctor for the first time was quite a thrill!
On the episode aired this past Saturday, 17th May, entitled “The Interstellar Song Contest”, the character reappeared in the series, played by actress Archie Panjabi, who is best known for her role on “The Good Wife”.

On Instagram, Davies posted a picture of O’Mara (who died in 2014), and he captioned it: “Kate portrayed the first Rani in Doctor Who, and we honored her during this year’s finale rehearsal by reading through it for her.
In the past, I casually strolled by her in Soho. She was petite and strikingly attractive! Despite this, she frequently appeared on various television shows such as “Absolutely Fabulous” and “Dynasty,” a unique blend indeed! However, it’s rumored that she undertook television work to finance her theatre company and her passion for Shakespeare.
The Rani is quite a sight to see – you’d expect her to be graceful and dainty, but she’s incredibly powerful, striding forcefully around the sets, she even roars with laughter! At one instance, her joy becomes so infectious that she skips playfully across the set. Majestic indeed!
Davies went on saying, “Oh, she’s fantastic! We’re thrilled to pay tribute to her. Many thanks to Kate, and hail her! Coming soon: the Rani’s most remarkable experiment in WISH WORLD, airing on BBC One, iPlayer, and Disney+.
Meanwhile, Panjabi has paid her own tribute to O’Mara ahead of the two-part season finale.
Addressing the BBC, Panjabi expressed: “There’s been a lot of discussion lately regarding the Rani’s comeback… and honestly, it’s understandable. The way Kate O’Mara embodied her role was exceptional, ruthless, and truly unforgettable.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled that she’s returned under Russell T Davies! But
In the United Kingdom, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC One, while viewers outside the UK can enjoy it on Disney+. For those in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who are accessible on the BBC iPlayer platform.
