Russell Crowe’s New War Thriller Is Finally Redeeming Box Office Setback By Winning Over Americans On Streaming

Russell Crowe’s new war movie officially completes its redemption on streaming.

The Academy Award-winning actor most recently played Hermann Göring, a Nazi official, in the film Nuremberg, which came out in the US in November 2025. While it didn’t initially do well at the box office domestically, the war movie later gained popularity and ultimately earned $56 million worldwide.

The movie Nuremberg became popular on Netflix shortly after its release in early March. It quickly climbed the charts, reaching number 6 with 3.1 million views during the week of March 9th to 15th. Even more notably, Nuremberg resonated with American viewers, landing at number 2, just behind War Machine. This is a significant turnaround for the film, which didn’t attract much of an audience when it was shown in theaters.

Despite a modest $14.5 million earned in the United States, the war movie performed well internationally, bringing in $42 million, largely due to strong ticket sales in Europe. Considering its $7-10 million budget, the film ultimately proved to be a commercial success.

The film did better internationally for a few reasons, like its historical setting, Tom Cruise’s popularity, and positive reviews from audiences. However, its success on streaming in the US wasn’t surprising – films starring Tom Cruise often gain more viewers when they become available for home viewing.

The film Nuremberg had a surprising journey to becoming critically acclaimed. It first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 to a largely negative response from critics. However, opinions dramatically shifted before the movie was released in the United States, with many more positive reviews appearing. Ultimately, it achieved a 71% score from critics and an impressive 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, marking a new record for director Crowe.

Reviews of Nuremberg highlighted the tense and unsettling dynamic between Russell Crowe, playing a Nazi official, and Rami Malek as the American psychiatrist, Douglas Kelley. The film centers on an American soldier tasked with assessing the mental states of Göring and other Nazi leaders before the Nuremberg trials began.

Critics highly praised Crowe’s performance, calling it both chilling and realistic, and some thought it deserved awards. He was initially considered for a BAFTA award for Best Actor, but ultimately didn’t make it to the final nominations.

Despite not winning another Oscar, Russell Crowe has a lot planned for 2026. Several of his films, including The Weight and Beast, are already scheduled for release this year. Bear Country and Billion Dollar Spy are currently being finished, and he’s also filming Highlander, where he’ll take on the role originally played by Sean Connery’s Ramirez. He’s working alongside Henry Cavill, his co-star from Man of Steel, on this project.

The war thriller Nuremberg is based on Jack El-Hai’s 2013 novel, The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. James Vanderbilt wrote and directed the film, which also stars Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Mark O’Brien, Colin Hanks, Wrenn Schmidt, Lydia Peckham, Richard E. Grant, and Michael Shannon.

Nuremberg is now streaming on Netflix.
