Russell Crowe replaces Mads Mikkelsen in true-life spy thriller
Russell Crowe has replaced Mads Mikkelsen in new true-life spy thriller Billion Dollar Spy.
The movie, set during the Cold War era, was initially revealed as a project in the year 2020. Initially, Mads Mikkelsen was intended to portray Adolf Tolkachev, a Soviet citizen who dared to share confidential information with the United States, putting everything at stake.
According to Deadline, it has been confirmed that the Oscar-winner Crowe will step into the role, while Industry’s Harry Lawtey is set to replace the initial lead, Armie Hammer, as the film’s primary CIA agent.
The movie is directed by Amma Asante, who also made “A United Kingdom,” and features a revised screenplay penned by Stephen Gaghan, known for “Traffic.” Originally, the script was written by Ben August.
According to David E Hoffman’s book, Billion Dollar Spy centers around Tolkachev, an individual who courageously attempted to challenge the Soviet government by providing information to the United States, despite repeatedly being turned down by the CIA.
Yet, he gains a confidant in CIA agent Tom Lenihan (portrayed by Lawtey), providing him with classified information that significantly changes the power dynamics between the Eastern and Western powers.
Frank Smith, president and CEO of Walden Media, stated, “Adolf Tolkachev’s courage serves as a powerful reminder that genuine heroism often involves significant personal sacrifice. His legacy stands as an inspiring example of standing firm for what is right, even when confronted by immense peril.
It’s a real pleasure for us to collaborate once more with the talented Russell Crowe, a man known for his exceptional, powerful acting roles.”

Lawtey, most recognized for his roles in the TV show “Industry,” previously appeared in “Joker: Folie à Deux” last year as Harvey Dent, and will soon be seen portraying Richard Burton in “Mr. Burton.
Billion Dollar Spy is yet to confirm a release date.
