Rupert Grint, best known for playing Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, has been thinking about how the role has stayed with him, even as he looks ahead to HBO’s new TV series. He was a central part of the cast for all eight movies, and like many of his co-stars, the character became a major part of his career, continuing to shape his work since the films ended.
According to Variety, Rupert Grint recently told the BBC that he contacted Alastair Stout, who is taking on the role of Ron Weasley in the upcoming HBO remake of Harry Potter, to offer his support. Grint also reflected on his time playing Ron, saying he’s proud of the impact he had on the character.
I wrote to Stout before he began, essentially passing the torch and wishing him well. I really enjoyed my time with the project, and I hope he feels the same. It’s a little odd seeing it start up again, but I’m excited to see what he does with it. I think it’s fantastic that he’s approaching it in a completely new way, and I’m sure it will be great.
Honestly, I don’t mind being known as ‘the other Weasley’ – being connected to Ron’s story is something I cherish. It’s amazing to meet people who grew up with Harry Potter and feel that connection to the books, and it means so much that it’s still impacting new generations. It was such a massive part of so many childhoods, and knowing I played a role in that, even as a supporting character, fills me with a lot of pride. I don’t think I’ll ever escape being recognized as Ron Weasley’s brother, and truthfully, I wouldn’t want to.
Rupert Grint became a defining actor for a generation through his portrayal of Ron Weasley. He’s been instantly recognizable as Harry Potter’s best friend ever since the first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, came out in 2001. His skillful performance was key to Ron’s development, showing the character’s increasing courage and his relationship with Hermione Granger (Emma Watson).

Grint expressed his enthusiasm for the new Harry Potter TV series on HBO, and shared his gratitude for the chance to be part of the original films. That opportunity is now being passed on to a new actor, Stout, who is expected to play the role for the show’s ten-year run. This marks a significant transition to a new generation of actors for the series.
Rupert Grint, best known for his work in the Harry Potter films, has continued to act in both television and movies. He recently appeared as Walter Gilman in an episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, titled “Dreams in the Witch House.” He also played Redmond in the movie Knock at the Cabin, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, and will soon be seen as Jon in the upcoming film Nightborn.
As Grint himself has said, he’s likely to be best known for playing Ron, and he seems pleased with that legacy, given its impact on both popular culture and film. While he’s moved on from the role, his support for Stout beautifully connects back to his time as Ron, reinforcing it as a key part of his career.
The upcoming show marks a new chapter for the world of Harry Potter, but Rupert Grint will always be remembered for his portrayal of Ron Weasley. He clearly cherishes the role, and the Wizarding World will likely remain a significant part of his career – and the hearts of those who grew up loving the books and films – for years to come.
HBO’s Harry Potter remake is expected to begin in 2027.
