RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under star Olivia Dreams reveals the surprising difference between Australian and New Zealand queens
As a lifestyle expert with over two decades of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that watching the evolution and diversity within the drag scene has been nothing short of captivating. The latest revelations from Olivia Dreams, a shining star from RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under, have provided an intriguing insight into the Kiwi-Aussie drag dynamics.
The former contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Olivia Dreams, shared an intriguing observation regarding the contrast between drag queens from Australia and those from New Zealand.
26-year-old Olivia gained recognition as the initial Wellington queen to feature on the Australian version of RuPaul’s Drag Race, now airing on Stan.
In the contest, the energetic and skilled performer, Olivia, was removed following her defeat in the well-known lip-sync duel.
Leaving the event, Olivia shared exclusive insights with Daily Mail Australia regarding her experience on the show, offering a peek into what truly happens backstage.
Yet, she confessed that the most astonishing revelation was discovering the distinction between Kiwi and Australian queens, a disparity that surfaced in the renowned ‘werk room’.
‘The biggest difference I notice is how loud Australian drag artists are,’ she shared.
In our area, we’re known for being quite lively, but in the workshop during the first episode, things reached an intensity I wasn’t prepared for. Hearing fellow competitor Vybe scream at such a high volume gave me a bit of a shock, like the sound was almost too much to handle.
Following that statement, Olivia pointed out that at their heart, Kiwi and Australian drag share striking similarities in their fundamental values.
She expressed that the fundamental spirit of drag, as seen in shows like “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” has always been close to her heart because it was a significant part of her upbringing.
Olivia, with three years under her belt in drag performances, shared that her stint on the program significantly increased both her self-confidence and makeup abilities.
‘My makeup has gotten really, really good, or much better than it was on the show,’ she shared.
‘I think, looking back, that’s the one thing I really wish I had the opportunity to change.
‘But on the other hand, I think it’s a really good thing for me because it shows growth and it shows that I’m constantly trying to better myself.’
Olivia was knocked out of the competition this week after the ‘two Sandies’ challenge.
In the spirit of the iconic character Sandy from the popular musical Grease (portrayed by Olivia Newton-John in the 1978 movie), the queens participated in a team challenge designed for girls.
One team donned costumes representing ‘Good Sandy’, whereas their counterparts took on ‘Bad Sandy’. This mirrors the transformation of the character, who shifts from an upright student to a rebellious, leather-wearing individual, as portrayed in the musical.
Regardless of her striking resemblance to Cher on the catwalk, the judges believed that Olivia failed to make an impact during the dance contest, blending in rather than standing out.
In the competition, her performance placed her among the lowest contenders alongside fellow New Zealander Lucina Innocence. However, during the lip sync battle, it was Lucina who emerged victorious over her.
Right now, you can stream the latest season of an eight-episode original series by Stan.
Comedian Rhys Nicholson is back on the principal judging team, accompanied by rotating queens who rule the Australian drag scene.
Previously untried, Michelle Visage, aged 56 and a seasoned contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race, is stepping into the hosting role for the very first time throughout the 15-year lifespan of this popular franchise.
This year, it became known that an American artist took over as the host from RuPaul, who has represented the series since its debut in 2009.
Michelle has been well-known in the competition scene for quite some time now. She started judging after she joined the American adaptation of the show back in 2011.
Drag Race Down Under’s fourth season and is available to stream now only on Stan.
