Rumor: House of the Dragon season 3 to start filming in March of 2025
As a die-hard fan who has weathered countless twists and turns in Westeros, I can attest that the wait for new episodes of “House of the Dragon” is like surviving the Long Night – arduous, nerve-wracking, but ultimately worth it. The news that shooting might not begin until March 2025 has left me with a sense of dread similar to that felt by the citizens of King’s Landing when they heard Daenerys was approaching.
The second season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel show, “House of the Dragon,” was completed earlier this year, leaving fans in anticipation for future episodes. It has been reported that pre-production started on October 31, and a recent rumor suggests that filming will commence in March 2025.
It seems there could be some truth to this, given statements made by House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal suggesting filming might begin around early 2025. Since March falls towards the later part of ‘earlyish’, it appears to align with his timeline.
After wrapping up at the end of the second season with numerous issues left unresolved, the series now has a multitude of topics to delve into in its upcoming season. Criston Cole and the Greens are advancing towards the Riverlands, while Daemon Targaryen and his rivermen’s forces are poised for an encounter. King Aegon has gone into hiding following his departure from King’s Landing, and a naval force of Triarchy ships is heading towards Westeros with the intention to attack either Rhaenyra Targaryen’s fortress on Dragonstone or Corlys Velaryon’s estate at Driftmark. Although Rhaenyra has enlisted several peasants to ride dragons, their combat skills have yet to be proven in battle. Here’s hoping that season 3 will jump right into the action!
But it won’t be for a while. Even if the shooting began on January 1, we wouldn’t be seeing new episodes until 2026. That’s worrying to some fans like Quinn The GM, who wrote on Twitter/X, “I truly think if anything is going to kill House of the Dragon it’s the two-year gaps between seasons. Ending the show in August and not filming until March is NUTS.”
I’ve noticed a pattern where long waits, often spanning two years, have become commonplace for popular fantasy and sci-fi series such as House of the Dragon, The Wheel of Time, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Now, I can’t help but wonder if this prolonged gap between seasons might be impacting the overall appeal or enthusiasm for these shows. It’s an interesting question to ponder upon.
In essence, it appears that longer gaps between seasons, such as the two-year hiatus for House of the Dragon or the three-year intervals for Stranger Things, don’t necessarily lead to a decline in popularity for shows. Instead, both series have continued to thrive and maintain their success on HBO and Netflix respectively.
In addition, HBO plans to keep fans engaged in 2025 by premiering a fresh Game of Thrones prequel titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Consequently, though they may not get to watch House of the Dragon in 2023, enthusiasts will at least be able to revisit Westeros. However, with season 2 of House of the Dragon receiving less positive feedback than its first season, this show might face increased scrutiny during this upcoming hiatus.
Many enthusiasts are eager for the filming to start sooner, and I believe it’s valid to question the delay given that the majority of ‘Game of Thrones’ seasons were released annually throughout most of its broadcast. I suspect the primary reason for the delay may be due to ‘House of the Dragon’ being a more intricate series to film compared to ‘Game of Thrones’. While ‘Game of Thrones’ gradually built up to grand, complex battle scenes with costly special effects, ‘House of the Dragon’ began with them. The numerous dragons require time and resources for animation.
It’s worth noting that HBO didn’t commit to a third season of “House of the Dragon” until the second season was already airing, much like they didn’t renew it for a second season until the first had begun. Whether an earlier renewal would have made a difference is uncertain, but considering there are plans to produce two more seasons to conclude the series, it seems possible that production for seasons 3 and 4 might be scheduled closer together, potentially reducing wait times.
It might be delayed, though it’s a long shot, that filming for House of the Dragon season 3 begins later than anticipated to allow writers to make changes following criticism from George R.R. Martin, the author of Fire & Blood. He seems displeased with the show deviating significantly from his source material. However, this is likely just hopeful speculation on my part.
Regardless, anticipate that season 1 of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” will be released in the year 2025, while season 3 of “House of the Dragon” is scheduled for 2026.
