Rumor: Greta Gerwig fighting with Netflix to get her Narnia movies on the big screen
As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the rise and fall of countless cinematic empires. From the grandeur of the silver screen to the convenience of streaming platforms, I’ve witnessed it all. Yet, there are moments that stir my soul, and the prospect of a new Narnia reboot under Greta Gerwig’s vision is one such moment.
In 2018, I became part of a significant agreement between Netflix and the C.S. Lewis Company, which paved the way for adapting all seven Chronicles of Narnia books into movies over a number of years. Fast forward to 2022, and it was disclosed that Greta Gerwig, the visionary director behind the blockbuster movie Barbie, had joined the project to direct at least two of these films. However, aside from this exciting news, details about the impending Narnia reboot remain largely under wraps.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that I’ve found myself patiently waiting for Netflix to release a new series of Narnia films. Fortunately, the streaming platform is brimming with enchanting family-friendly fantasy movies and shows to keep me entertained in the meantime, such as Damsel and Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, it seems that the production of the Narnia movies is still in its infancy, with no cast members confirmed as of yet. Various actors are being whispered about, including Louis Partridge and Saoirse Ronan.
Currently, it appears that Greta Gerwig is still working out the specifics regarding the distribution of her upcoming films. Typically, Netflix releases new original productions directly to their streaming service without any prior theater screenings. However, there have been exceptions, as Netflix has a history of providing limited theatrical releases for new movies. This can be seen in examples like Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” and “Tick Tick… Boom!”, which both had brief runs in cinemas, as well as “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”. Nevertheless, it is common for Netflix movies to be exclusively available on their platform.
As per reports from reputable source Puck, known for industry gossip, Greta Gerwig is vigorously attempting to persuade Netflix to allow her Narnia films a substantial cinema release. This stance seems reasonable given that filmmakers generally prefer their work to be showcased on the large screen. Although Netflix’s library is commendable, it doesn’t possess the same power and cultural influence as a movie theater. Moreover, the Narnia books are grand epic fantasies that would undoubtedly look stunning on the big screen.
Indeed, the film adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia have a substantial cinematic legacy. Spanning from 2005 to 2010, there were three films produced based on this series. Both casual viewers and critics found these movies to be quite enjoyable. The first installment, titled The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, earned an impressive global box office revenue of more than $745 million. Frankly, if that doesn’t make you eager for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming films in theaters, I can’t imagine what would!
