There’s speculation that Brainiac might appear in a future *Superman* movie. Gary Buechler, who hosts the *Nerdrotic* YouTube channel, recently discussed this with Chris Gore from *Film Threat*. Buechler claims a source told him an early version of the film had two post-credit scenes, one of which-featuring Brainiac-was ultimately cut. He suggests this Brainiac scene may have been moved to the upcoming *Supergirl* movie instead.
James Gunn, who will write and direct, has told The Hollywood Reporter he’s developing a new Superman movie. He describes it as the next chapter in Superman’s story, but clarifies it won’t be a direct sequel titled *Superman 2*.
James Gunn has shared that he’s been developing the story for the new Superman movie and is eager to start filming in the near future.

Every great story needs a powerful villain, and a Superman movie featuring Brainiac as the enemy could be exactly what fans are looking for.
Why The Superman Movie Didn’t Feature Brainiac
If you watched *Superman*, you might remember there weren’t any hints about future storylines in the credits. However, Milly Alcock briefly appears as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin and also known as Supergirl. Her movie is officially the next project planned for the DC Universe (DCU), and it’s scheduled to come out next June.

Variety reports that the upcoming Supergirl movie will follow her journey across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. During her travels, she encounters a woman named Ruthye and gets caught up in a dangerous quest for revenge. This expansive storyline could be a good opportunity to introduce a major villain, such as Brainiac.

Brainiac debuted in DC Comics in 1958, aligning with the classic, retro feel James Gunn is aiming for. According to DC’s website, Brainiac comes from the planet Colu and, though his robotic form has changed over time, he remains a supremely dangerous villain. He’s driven by an insatiable hunger for knowledge, and he’ll destroy countless lives to get it.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the new DC Universe’s *Superman* movie could feature the villain Brainiac. Hollywood has recently shown a lot of interest in stories about artificial intelligence – like in films such as *Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One*, *M3GAN*, and *Companion* – and based on what James Gunn has indicated, it’s possible Superman will face Brainiac, potentially alongside Supergirl or even Lex Luthor.

A scene after the credits of the *Supergirl* movie, or including a reference within the show itself, could naturally connect it to the upcoming *Man of Tomorrow* film.
All We Really Know
James Gunn announced on May 10th that filming for *Supergirl* is complete. The movie is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2026, and the next Superman film, *Man of Tomorrow*, is planned for July 9, 2027 – whether or not Brainiac appears. Because the DC Universe is designed as one continuous story centered around Superman, it’s likely these films will connect directly to each other.

James Gunn has stated he initially thought about using Brainiac as the main villain in the first *Superman* movie. A short behind-the-scenes video on YouTube even showed a sketch of a character who looked like one of Brainiac’s different forms. It’s clear Gunn is considering Brainiac for a future project when the moment is right.
Conclusion
James Gunn reportedly works with short notes rather than detailed plans, according to his brother Sean. This means he might still change his mind about featuring Brainiac in a *Superman* film. However, the rumor has already generated a lot of excitement among fans, and that could make it difficult to dismiss the idea.
