A source at Nexus Point is reporting that Danielle Deadwyler is in discussions with Ryan Coogler, the director of *Black Panther*, about joining his upcoming reboot of *The X-Files*. The new series is expected to follow the original’s format with two lead investigators – a man and a woman – and Deadwyler is reportedly being considered for the female lead.
Janae Deadwyler’s performances in films like *Till* and *The Piano Lesson* earned her a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress. There’s currently speculation about her potential involvement in a reboot of *The X-Files*. It’s unknown if she would play the iconic Agent Scully – a role originally made famous by Gillian Anderson – or a completely new character. If she were cast as Scully, it would be a significant change, reimagining the character with a different ethnicity.

Ryan Coogler is famous for directing the *Black Panther* movies and his recent film, *Sinners*.
Legacy of The X-Files
Created by Chris Carter, *The X-Files* is a science fiction drama that originally aired on Fox for nine seasons, from 1993 to 2002. The series also spawned two films: *The X-Files: Fight the Future* (1998) and *The X-Files: I Want to Believe* (2008).
The show would later be revived for two more seasons between 2016 and 2018.
Gillian Anderson, who starred in *The X-Files*, reportedly had a meeting with the director to talk about the new series.
Exuberant Exultation from The X-Files Alumni
In a 2024 interview on the *Today Show*, Gillian Anderson expressed her strong support for the project, saying she believed it was the perfect way to revive the series.
Ryan Coogler, the highly talented director of *Black Panther*, has contacted Chris Carter with a proposal for a new version of the show, and I believe it’s the perfect way to bring it back.

Earlier this year, director Ryan Coogler talked about his plans for a new version of *The X-Files* during an interview on the *Last Podcast On The Left*.
The director, age 39, has been looking forward to this project for a while and is enthusiastic about getting back to work on it. He hopes some of the episodes will be genuinely frightening if the team does a good job. They’re aiming to create something excellent for longtime fans of *The X-Files*, while also attracting new viewers.
While there was initial enthusiasm, conversations about the project online have become more complex and critical.
Worries from the World Wide Web
Some people have questioned whether Ryan Coogler is the right person to lead this project. As the director of both *Black Panther* movies, he’s faced a lot of online criticism for his work on those films.
Two popular video essays, MauLer’s “Black Panther: An Unbridled Rage” and The Critical Drinker’s “Black Panther Is Overrated,” each have over 2 million views.
Critics pointed out several problems with the highly praised film. They specifically mentioned weak writing, characters that didn’t develop well, an uneven use of technology and magic, and, most significantly, unclear reasons for the characters’ actions.
These details are essential for any story, but they’re particularly important for science fiction that centers on its characters. If these elements aren’t well-developed, it will be very noticeable, especially considering how much the original series was praised for its compelling character development.

Since we don’t have many specifics right now, critics will likely need to wait for more information before forming a final opinion.
The X-Files reboot is currently in production and does not yet have a release date.
