Rotten Tomatoes Favorite Just Got Renewed!
As a dedicated fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The show that swept us off our feet during its stellar first season just announced some fantastic news – they’re working on even more episodes! After such a successful debut, it seems we’ll be getting more of this brilliant series to enjoy.
This week, it’s been confirmed that Apple TV+ is bringing back “Women in Blue,” or “Las Azules,” for a second season on their streaming service. The Spanish-language crime drama series has received critical acclaim, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season of eight episodes. Currently, the Mexican show featuring an all-Latin American cast is being produced for its second season. Notable actresses like Ariel Award nominee Bábara Mori, Ximena Sariñana, Natalia Téllez, and Amorita Rasgado will be part of Season 2.
Building upon real-life occurrences, the second season unfolds as these four women persist in challenging conservative societal norms by becoming Mexico’s pioneering female police officers. Promoted to lieutenant, Maria (Mori) grapples with a complex internal struggle: adhering to the laws she has sworn to uphold versus her unyielding pursuit of truth following the murder of a young university student. This tragic event triggers further casualties and exposes a hidden conspiracy. As the killings escalate, the boundaries between culprits, victims, and vigilantes become increasingly blurred. This enigma of buried secrets and emotional reckonings ultimately draws Maria, Ángeles (Sariñana), Gabina (Rasgado), and Valentina (Téllez) into a labyrinth of truth and self-discovery.
The series titled “Women in Blue” was developed by the International Emmy Award-winning duo, Fernando Rovzar and Pablo Aramendi. The executive producers for this project are Wendy Riss, Erica Sánchez Su, and Billy Rovzar, with Lemon Studios handling production duties.
Previously, Rovzar stated that their aim was to depict the raw truth of the situation. This representation mirrors what such a victory would look like in Mexico. They acknowledged that despite this victory, there’s still much more to achieve, and the system they wish to transform has mechanisms in place to maintain its control. A single victory doesn’t transform the world, and that’s part of the message they wanted to convey: this is an ongoing fight. The women who started fighting in 1971, namely María, Ángeles, Gabina, and Valentina, have paved the way, but today’s women in Mexico continue to battle for change. Rovzar didn’t want to end on a note suggesting that everyone was content because reality isn’t like that.
There’s More Content Coming to Apple TV+
As a film enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement! Not only has Apple TV+ affirmed the future of another critically acclaimed series this month, but they’ve also given a green light for a second season to a new comedy that received top marks in its debut. The beloved sitcom Trying has been renewed for a fifth season as well. Earlier this year, the intriguing dark comedy Where’s Wanda? was granted a second season, and the new seasons of Severance and Ted Lasso have officially been confirmed. This is truly an exciting time for Apple TV+!
While some series might find themselves fortunate, not all are that lucky. Unfortunately, Apple TV+ also decided to end the run for six other shows this month: Mythic Quest, Time Bandits, Sunny, Still Up, Schmigadoon!, and Acapulco.
Women in Blue is streaming on Apple TV+.
