Rosario Dawson shares how costume designer Shawna Trpcic honored Ahsoka Tano
As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that Shawna Trpcic’s work on the live-action Star Wars series was nothing short of magical. Her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to honoring the franchise’s rich history truly shines through in her costumes for Ahsoka Tano, a character I hold near and dear to my heart.
Since the inception of Star Wars in 1977, the striking costumes have continued to be a significant aspect of the franchise. These eye-catching designs have transitioned from the silver screen and found a place in the live-action Star Wars television series.
In shows like “The Mandalorian”, “The Book of Boba Fett”, and “Ahsoka”, the late Shawna Trpcic was responsible for designing extraordinary costumes. Rosario Dawson, in an interview with Variety, reminisced about their collaborative work on her character’s costumes in Season 1 of “Ahsoka”. Dawson spoke fondly of Trpcic’s dedication to creating designs that subtly referenced the animated version of the character. According to Dawson, Trpcic’s work was not merely enjoyable; it required careful attention to detail and thorough research. She emphasized how Trpcic aimed to uphold the legacy of the Star Wars franchise through her creations.
“From Easter eggs to nods to the animation and the film’s history, she would imbue it in her work.”
In the creative process, Trpcic was responsible for developing costumes that allowed Dawson to execute the complex fight sequences Ahsoka is famed for in the animated series. Simultaneously, the character needed to portray a phase of life distinct from the Ahsoka depicted in “The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels”. The goal was to make her appear as someone who had fully embraced the Ronin lifestyle. Through collaboration, Dawson and Trpcic worked together to actualize this concept, welcoming each other’s suggestions and ideas.
As a gamer putting myself in the shoes of Rosario, I desired Ahsoka to display a touch more exposed areas, but not in the manner the younger version did. So, we reached a mutual agreement. Rather than unveiling her midriff, we opted for showcasing some skin on her arms and back instead. The actress endorsed this look, making it easier for her to execute complex fight sequences with grace and agility.
One intriguing aspect that Dawson discusses is how Trpcic paid tribute to Ahsoka’s bond with Anakin by designing her costume, specifically including the Padawan beads in a creative way. The Padawan beads are a cherished memory from The Clone Wars, and Trpcic and Dawson achieved this by embedding crystals into Ahsoka’s belt.
“I loved her having this piece of this relationship and a nod to Anakin in the ‘Clone Wars.’ Even if it doesn’t mean something to someone in the present day, it’s a detail for the fans, and they immediately notice and appreciate it.”
Beyond Ahsoka’s gray outfit from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, the initial five episodes of Ahsoka, and “Ahsoka the White” in live-action, Trpcic was also responsible for designing the costume. In the animated series, fans first glimpsed Ahsoka in white at the end of Star Wars Rebels. In live-action, this is the version of Ahsoka that appears after her encounter with Anakin in the World Between Worlds in Episode 5, “Shadow Warrior.” This costume is not only lighter in color but also in design, and Dawson discusses how Trpcic made it more comfortable for the actress to wear.
