Rosanna Arquette claims she’s the only actor from the 1994 film Pulp Fiction who didn’t profit from its success at the box office.
Quentin Tarantino’s film, created on a modest $8 million budget, went on to become a huge hit with both critics and audiences, earning over $213.9 million around the world.
The movie featured major stars like Bruce Willis and John Travolta, who was hoping to revitalize his career. Everyone involved agreed to take reduced paychecks for the independently produced film – Willis, for example, took only $800,000 instead of his typical $10 million – but they all had a deal to earn a share of the profits if the film did well.
Patricia Arquette, 66, played a small but notable part in the film as the wife of Eric Stoltz’s character, but she recently disclosed that she wasn’t included in the profit-sharing agreement.
She told The Sunday Times Magazine that everyone else profited from the deal, but she didn’t receive any of the money. “I was the only one who didn’t get a share,” she said.
During an interview, Arquette criticized Tarantino’s use of a racial slur in one of his films. However, she doesn’t think Tarantino is at fault. Instead, she believes Harvey Weinstein, the film’s producer, was responsible for her being excluded from the cast’s financial agreement.
Harvey Weinstein, now 73 and in prison for rape, sexually harassed actress Patricia Arquette in the early 1990s at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Arquette shared that while she avoided being assaulted, she faced consequences for both rejecting unwanted advances and for later speaking out about her experience.
In late 2017, as the #MeToo movement gained momentum, Arquette was among the many women who publicly accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. These accusations eventually contributed to his conviction on sex assault charges in 2022.
The actress has publicly criticized director Quentin Tarantino – who also wrote the film – for repeatedly using a racial slur throughout the movie. This has sparked a heated argument between the two, who were once close friends, this week.
Arquette told The Times she’s completely fed up with the use of the N-word and finds it deeply offensive. She also criticized Quentin Tarantino, saying she doesn’t understand why he’s allowed to use it without facing consequences, and that his use of the word isn’t artistic – it’s simply racist and disturbing.
Tarantino, 62, firmly responded to the actress in a statement to the Daily Mail on Tuesday, saying, ‘I hired you, and you accepted payment for the work.’
He asked Rosanna if the attention she was receiving from over a hundred media outlets was worth damaging their relationship and dismissing a film she had previously expressed excitement about being involved in.
Tarantino disapproved of Arquette criticizing the film so long after it came out.
“Do you feel this way now?” Tarantino asked. “After I hired you and you took the money, only to criticize the work – likely for selfish reasons – it demonstrates a real lack of both class and integrity.”
The director said that ‘there is supposed to be an esprit de corps between artistic colleagues.’
Merriam-Webster defines the French phrase Tarantino used as the feeling of unity, pride, and loyalty that binds a group together.
Tarantino told Arquette, ‘It looks like we achieved our goal,’ and then added in writing, ‘Congratulations – Q.’
