Rong Bao to Inaugurate Carl Kostyál’s Hong Kong Gallery

London artist Rong Bao captivated viewers for the first time at her 2023 solo debut exhibition at Saatchi Gallery, titled “Rong Bao Is Me”. This exhibit offered visitors a playful journey into Bao’s imaginative realm, featuring bouncy inflatable sculptures and engaging installations. The collection redefined the ordinary as enchanting, adding a burst of freshness to the usually somber atmosphere of white-walled galleries with its infectious sense of curiosity.

Beginning next month, artist Bao will kick off Carl Kostyál’s gallery in Hong Kong with a fresh solo exhibition titled after herself. Running from March 23rd until April 30th, this show delves further into her continuous investigation of mischief and defiance, using tactility, materiality, form, and her distinctive humor. “In my artistic odyssey, playfulness and humor serve as the foundation upon which I build a surreal interpretation of the world,” Bao stated recently. “Through my work, I interact with the absurd, where warped self-portraits, the infectious laughter of ‘Alien Babies’, and a catalog of air become essential components of my story.

Bao’s artistic work encompasses various forms such as sculpture, painting, video, live performance, and installations. This versatile practice delivers a light-hearted yet thought-provoking critique of societal issues, focusing on topics like excessive consumption, consumer culture, and disregard for the environment. Bao describes his art as a blend of humor and poignancy, offering a mirror to human nature by pointing out the absurdities that permeate our daily lives and cultural practices.
