Ronald D. Moore almost wishes “Yesterday’s Enterprise” hadn’t happened
As a hardcore Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours navigating the vast expanse of the final frontier, I can confidently say that “Yesterday’s Enterprise” is undeniably one of the most captivating episodes in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s illustrious history. The intricate plot, the emotional depth, and the brilliant character development make it a must-watch for any Trekkie worth their salt.
Often regarded as one of the top episodes from Star Trek: The Next Generation’s third season, “Yesterday’s Enterprise” saw the return of Lt. Tasha Yar, a character who had perished towards the end of season one. This was due to Denise Crosby deciding to depart from the series. However, many fans felt she deserved a more dignified demise, and this episode certainly provided that.
In a thrilling turn of events, I find myself serving alongside Tasha Yar on the starship Enterprise-C, caught up in an extraordinary spatio-temporal rift. On one side, chaos reigned with a fierce Klingon war in full swing. Unfortunately, our timeline was altered, and the aftermath forced the Enterprise-C back through that rift, claiming the lives of all onboard, including Yar. The only individual who retained memories of this alternate reality was Guinan, who then turned to Geordi La Forge for more details about my past.
Among the 178 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, this outstanding episode is particularly notable. However, Ronald D. Moore expressed a sentiment on Syfy.com that he regrets its occurrence, as he initially intended to utilize the plotline for Star Trek: Generations. Instead, his vision was for Enterprise-A under Captain Kirk’s [William Shatner] command to emerge from a wormhole.
If we hadn’t have done that episode, then [the movie] would have been the Enterprise-A coming through that wormhole, and you’d have Spock and Kirk and everyone on that ship, we’d play the same story. They — the original crew — they had to go back to their deaths. And Guinan knew Kirk, and Guinan knew Picard, and that would have been an amazing movie.
In simpler terms, if the story had unfolded differently, it would have been Captain Kirk and his crew who were aware of their impending journey through a rift leading to their deaths instead of just Kirk dying in the movie “Generations.” This means that rather than just Kirk losing his life, the entire crew would have perished in the film. Given the fans’ reactions to the original movie, I suspect they wouldn’t have been any more pleased with this alternative version.
