Ron Hale, soap actor from 'Ryan's Hope' and 'General Hospital,' dies at 78

As a long-time fan of daytime soap operas, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ron Hale, a talented actor who brought Mike Corbin and Dr. Rodger Coleridge to life on my screen for many years. His career spanned over four decades, and he left an indelible mark on the genre with his captivating performances.

Actress Ron Hale, famously known for his roles as Mike Corbin in “General Hospital” and Dr. Rodger Coleridge in “Ryan’s Hope,” has passed away at the age of 78.

It’s reported that the actor passed away in Saint George, South Carolina, on August 27, as stated by Bryant Funeral Home located in South Carolina. The reason for his demise has not been revealed.

His niece Lori Brown said he died unexpectedly at his home, according to Soap Opera Network.

“He was a wonderful human and he will be missed dearly. May he rest in peace,” Brown said.

Ronald Hale Thigpen was born to James Ray Thigpen Sr. and Elinor Jane Doerr Thigpen on January 2, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is their son.

The Emmy-nominated individual graduated from Furman University in South Carolina and made appearances on both television, film, and stage. He performed in multiple productions at the Trustus Theatre in Columbia, S.C., a theater that was established by his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Kay Thigpen, as confirmed by family sources.

1968 marked Hale’s debut TV appearance, where he had a minor role on “N.Y.P.D.” A year later, he made his first foray into soap operas with “Search for Tomorrow.” Additionally, he featured in guest spots on the original “Matlock” and “MacGyver,” and portrayed convicted Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis in the 1976 hit film “All the President’s Men.

For nearly 14 years (from 1975 to 1989), the actor graced over 900 episodes of the ABC daytime drama “Ryan’s Hope”. During this period, he was acknowledged with two nominations for Daytime Emmys in the supporting actor category, both while portraying Dr. Coleridge – a cunning physician hailing from an influential, wealthy family known for their old money.

Between 1995 and 2010, Hale was well-known for portraying Mike Corbin, the father of “General Hospital” mob boss Sonny Corinthos. He also appeared in numerous episodes of the spinoff series “Port Charles.” After his retirement from acting in 2010, Max Gail replaced Hale as Mike Corbin on “General Hospital” in 2018.

It’s with great sorrow that we, the General Hospital Family, announce the passing of Ron Hale,” a message shared on Instagram on Wednesday stated. “Our thoughts go out to his family as they navigate through this tough period. He was not just an exceptional actor but also an indelible coworker. May he find eternal peace.

Billy Warlock, a former co-star of Hale’s on ‘General Hospital’, expressed deep sorrow by tweeting, ‘It’s with great sadness that we’ve said goodbye to another exceptional individual.’ He mourns the loss of his friend Ron Hale, who was both gifted and kind. I will dearly miss him.

Hale is survived by his nieces and nephews, Lori Brown, Max Brabham, Erin Wilson and Marc Brown.
