Romesh Ranganathan Reveals How His Lazy Eye Saved His Comedy Career

Romesh Ranganathan has revealed the one thing he doesn’t think he’d have become a comedian without.

The, 47, has had an incredibly successful career on the comedy circuit and on various TV shows.

Currently, he attributes a significant part of his success to one distinctive trait related to his physical appearance – his squint or crossed eye.

In simpler terms, Romesh has an issue with his right eye where the upper lid tends to droop, often referred to as a droopy eyelid. This condition originated from a severe eye infection that affected him at the tender age of three.

On his latest podcast, What’s My Age Again?, he mentioned that people have suggested correcting his eyesight multiple times. However, he expressed that he doesn’t believe he would ever choose to undergo such a procedure.

Previously, Katherine shared with him an insight from Jimmy Carr: “It’s beneficial to be somewhat caricature-like. People should be able to sum you up in just three words.” Jimmy, with his impressive career, offers sound advice indeed.

‘They easily recognize your unique characteristics. For example, people might guess you’re of Sri Lankan descent based on certain features. You’re into hip hop music. Some might point out the distinctive shape of your eyes, like you mentioned earlier. That’s a notable trait. Similarly, comedian Rob Beckett is often recognized by his distinctive teeth.’

As a single mother, I find myself at Hooters, but everyone has their quirks. For instance, Jimmy has distinctive LEGO-like hair and unique teeth. Essentially, he advises me not to misplace or let go of important items since they matter.

Initially, I used to alter my hairstyle frequently, and he advised me against it, saying, “You really shouldn’t make too many changes to your hair.” Interestingly, he himself opted for a hair transplant, but his message was essentially, “Don’t mess with your own hair too much.

Afterward, she inquired from Romesh, who has been on a weight loss journey for quite some time: “Weren’t you concerned slightly, like, ‘If I make too many changes, will I lose my followers? Will I gain new ones? Will my content still connect?’

He responded by stating, “No, I don’t fret over changes in weight, hair, or any other aspects. Frankly, I’m not too concerned about those matters. On several instances, it has been suggested to me that I could undergo an eye correction.

I can’t imagine myself doing that, as I believe my unique eye condition might have prevented me from becoming a comedian.

Following the announcement that the popular Sky panel show, A League Of Their Own, will conclude after a run of 15 years, Romesh makes his podcast appearance.

On Monday, it was revealed that the beloved sports-themed comedy series will air its last season in August, marking its final farewell.

In 2019, Romesh replaced James Corden, aged 46, as the show’s host. The program currently has Jamie Redknapp and Jill Scott serving as team captains, with Micah Richards regularly joining Jill Scott as her assistant.

Since its debut in 2010, former footballer and Sky Sports analyst Jamie Redknapp, aged 51, has consistently featured on the program, with fellow pundit Freddie Flintoff, now 47 years old, serving as the opposing team’s captain at that time.

The program played a significant role in kick-starting the media career of the Ashes champion, until in 2023, a former footballer named Jill took over the position instead.

Over the past fifteen years, Jack Whitehall, Kevin Bishop, Mo Gilligan, and former Sky Sports News host Georgie Thompson have frequently appeared as guests on the program.

TopMob realizes that the popular show is set to conclude this summer with a special “goodbye season”, which will be broadcast on Sky Max and NOW towards the end of the year.

The last episode of the show is set to feature incredible tests, also known as legendary challenges, along with hilarious scenes that will be hard to forget. It boasts an impressive roster of popular television stars.

As a devoted fan, I’m sharing the news that our beloved host Romesh will be joining team captains Jamie and Jill for the final time on set in August. Our regular, Micah, will also be there to round off the series alongside us.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the star-studded lineup gracing our screens on this iconic show. Not only have legends of sport and entertainment made an appearance here, but some have even dared to step into the studio for thrilling stunts!

Distinguished athletes like retired heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko, Olympic gold winner Mo Farah, and former pro boxer Nicola Adams are among those who’ve graced our show with their presence.

For the initial 13 seasons, the show “A League of Their Own” was hosted by James Corden, who is also known for his role in Gavin and Stacey. However, in 2019, he decided to step down from hosting duties.

In 2018, comedian Romesh stepped into the role previously held by James, following a period where he filled in as a frequent guest. This change occurred when he succeeded Jack Whitehall.

As a lifestyle aficionado, I’d share that this renowned program has given birth to numerous spin-offs, taking us on exhilarating journeys across America and the Far East. Joining our beloved host, Jamie, and other celebrities, we’ve embarked on a series of unforgettable escapades, filled with laughter, surprises, and a dash of mischief!

Each episode includes multiple face-offs between the Red and Blue squads, led respectively by Redknapp and Scott. Throughout the show, these teams must maneuver their way through various rounds, culminating in The Ultimate Test, which is often a thrilling studio performance or stunt.

Frequently, the format brings back popular games like “Pop Star Penalties,” where famous musicians compete in a penalty shootout against a regular cast member.

Other daft challenges have included Human Darts, Wink Murder and Bowling.
