Rogue One Director Reveals 1 Andor Character He Would’ve Wanted in Movie

Tony Gilroy, the mind behind Andor, revealed his preferred character from the series that he would have included in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story if he had been involved from the start. It’s important to note that Andor functions as a prequel to Rogue One, having been released in 2016. Gilroy joined the film project during production, wrote additional scenes, and served as the second-unit director under Gareth Edwards.

In a recent chat with Empire Magazine, director Gareth Edwards confessed that if given the chance, I’d have loved to include Faye Marsay’s character, Vel Sartha, in Rogue One. Speaking about her potential role alongside Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, the film’s lead character, I mused, “Imagine Vel Sartha as Jyn Erso! Oh, she would have some intriguing dialogue for sure.” I continued to ponder the dynamic between these two characters, suggesting, “I can just imagine Jyn lighting up all of Vel’s irritation!” (Adapted from ComicBook)

In the early 2000s, John Knoll, Star Wars prequel trilogy visual effects supervisor, proposed Rogue One as a potential episode for a Star Wars: Underworld series. This show wasn’t produced, but after Disney bought Lucasfilm, Knoll pitched the idea again. Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) was initially brought on to write the script, but he eventually left, and Chris Weitz (About a Boy) took over. Initially, director Gareth Edwards planned an ending where the main characters would survive, but in the end, they opted for the movie’s current darker yet hopeful finale.

2016 saw the addition of Gilroy to the film’s production team, which subsequently went through additional filming sessions. Moreover, Gilroy played a crucial part in the on-set shooting of the current movie’s finale and the post-production process. Despite this, Edwards continued to be associated with the project throughout this period.

Significantly, the series titled “Andor” premiered on Disney+ from September 21, 2022, to May 13, 2025. In this show, Vel is a member of the rebellion against the Galactic Empire and a relative of Mon Mothma, portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly.
