Rock legend with iconic Christmas single reveals he's working on first album in 14 years after 'neglecting' music career

Oh, the sheer thrill that courses through my veins at the news of Roy Wood, the legendary rock maestro, preparing to unveil his first album in 14 years! As a dedicated fan who’s grown up with the soulful strains of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day echoing in my festive celebrations, this is like finding a long-lost treasure map leading straight to a chest full of musical gold.

The renowned rock artist responsible for the popular holiday tune “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day” has surprised fans by sharing that he is currently producing his initial album in 14 years as a pre-holiday treat.

78-year-old ex-lead singer of Wizzard, Roy Wood, has dug deep into his personal collection and found previously unheard tracks that he believes are good enough for a brand new album.

He admitted he became ‘lazy’ and  started to ‘neglect’ his music career, but that is about to change.

During an interview with The Sun, Roy mentioned discovering approximately eight songs that remain incomplete and have yet to be played publicly.

I plan on wrapping things up and completing a fresh album soon. It feels like the right moment, doesn’t it?

‘It’s about time I wasn’t quite so lazy and did it.

‘I’ve sort of neglected the music a bit.’

In the 1970s and 80s, Wood gained prominence as a member of Electric Light Orchestra and The Move, two well-known bands during that period.

In 1965, Wood established The Move, and during their tenure, they achieved hits such as “Flowers in the Rain.” Simultaneously, Roy, joined by bandmates Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan, initiated Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), a group that later achieved significant commercial acclaim.

Back in August 1973, Roy prepared himself for singing I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day by putting on a bobble hat and some gloves, setting the festive tone.

Since its release in 1973, Wood’s Christmas tune has been earning him approximately £180,000 annually in royalty payments. Furthermore, this song has consistently ranked among the top 50 hits in the UK every year since 2007.

Last year, Wham! officially bagged the Christmas Number One title.

However, The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York and a rendition of Wizard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday were neck-and-neck in the fight for first place.

Roy’s last release was the 2011 record, Music Book, a double album put out on EMI.

Altogether, he had more than 20 singles in the UK Singles Charts, including three UK No. 1 hits.

In 2017, Roy became a part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognized for his membership in Electric Light Orchestra.
