David Coverdale announced his retirement on Thursday, bringing an end to a remarkable 59-year career in rock music. He’s best known for his work with bands like Whitesnake, Deep Purple, and alongside Jimmy Page.
In a recent YouTube video, the 74-year-old musician announced he’s ready to retire from performing, saying it’s time to give up his signature rock and roll style – including his platform shoes and tight jeans.
I’m signing off for now. I love you all, and I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way—the musicians, the crew, my fans, and my family. It’s been an incredible experience.
Coverdale lifted his drink and said, ‘Now that I’m retiring, I hope you understand. I love you all very much, and I’m saying goodbye.’
The singer, known for his work in glam metal, shared a video of cherished memories from his career during the concert. The montage was accompanied by a fresh remix of Whitesnake’s 2011 song, ‘Forevermore’.
David Coverdale started the band Whitesnake in 1978, but they didn’t achieve their greatest success until 1987. That year, the songs “Is This Love” and “Here I Go Again” became huge hits, reaching number 2 and number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, respectively.

His second wife, Julie ‘Tawny’ Kitaen, who he divorced in 1991 after a short two-year marriage, memorably appeared in both of his music videos.
The iconic performer died in 2021 at the age of 59 from heart problems and drug use.
I haven’t seen Coverdale touring with Whitesnake since 2022, and honestly, it’s been tough knowing he was dealing with a truly awful sinus infection that year – he said it was the worst he’d ever experienced! It really seemed to knock him for six.
In a 2023 interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, the grandfather of two, and seasoned singer, explained that he knows those songs incredibly well – like they’re family.
I think this was the worst illness I’ve ever experienced. For seven months, I was on antibiotics that kept getting stronger, and also on a really powerful steroid called Prednisone.
In August, David Coverdale gave permission for a Whitesnake tribute act – featuring former band members – to play a festival in Serbia, suggesting his music might live on through them after all.
Ian Gillan, a singer originally from Saltburn-by-the-Sea, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of Deep Purple. He became the band’s frontman from 1973 to 1976, stepping in after the original singer briefly left.
In 1993, he joined forces with Jimmy Page, the guitarist from Led Zeppelin, for a brief project named Coverdale-Page. They released one album and performed on a tour in Japan.
Cindy Barker, Coverdale’s third wife, responded to his Instagram post. They recently celebrated the 35th anniversary of when they first met last Saturday.

‘So proud of you, Baby!’ the 59-year-old Food That Rocks co-author gushed in the comments.
Honestly, watching you pour your heart and soul into everything you did was just… incredible. You gave so much of yourself to others, always with such kindness and generosity. And now? Now you finally deserve to just live for yourself, do whatever makes you happy. It’s about time, and I’m so thrilled for you!
On Thursday, the couple’s son, Jasper, posted a photo of himself having dinner at Faena New York with the ‘legend’ he praised for a dignified retirement.
The 29-year-old, who benefits from a famous family, enthusiastically praised their father, saying they couldn’t imagine a more admirable person or parent. They credited his kindness, skill, and ability to connect with people globally for the family’s international recognition.
So, what’s next is entirely up to you, David! We raise a toast to you – a father, husband, a man who shares stories, a fighter, an artist… a true hero. Congratulations on all your incredible achievements, and may your legacy be remembered always.
Oh my gosh, did you know David Coverdale actually became an American citizen way back in 2007? It just makes me love him even more! And before Jasmine, he was married to Julia Borkowski way back in ’74, and they had a beautiful daughter, Jessica, who’s 47 now. It’s just so fascinating learning everything about his life!
