Rock band Muse pay tribute to Diogo Jota during set at Portugal’s NOS Alive as guitarist Chris Wolstenholme sports Liverpool footballer’s name and number on jersey

At the NOS Alive festival in Portugal, held on a Saturday in 2025, Muse honored soccer player Diogo Jota with an emotional tribute during their performance in his native land.

On the final evening of a three-day event held at the Passeio Maritimo de Alges in Lisbon, the rock group consisting of Matt Bellamy, Dominic Howard, and Christopher Wolstenholme graced the stage.

At 9:15 PM, Muse graced the main stage prior to headliners Nine Inch Nails, playing their most popular songs for the bustling audience. However, they paid a quiet tribute to Jota, as the festival took place only a few days after his unfortunate passing on July 3.

46-year-old guitarist Chris donned Portugal’s soccer jersey during the performance, and prior to the final song, he turned to show that Diogo Jota, with the number 21, was written on his back.

A wave of applause swept through the crowd when Jota’s name, displayed prominently on the screen, became part of an emotional tribute to the beloved football player after his unfortunate demise.

The heartrending incident transpired in Portugal, approximately 200 miles along the coast from where he was raised, specifically in Gondomar, alongside his late brother Andre, who was also part of the tragic accident.

The location is not far across the border from where Jota and his brother met their tragic end in a fatal car accident, which took place in the northwest region of Spain, specifically Zamora.

It’s clear that Jota, who is 28 years old, was heading from Portugal to Santander in Spain. He was supposed to catch a ferry there, returning to the UK, as he had been advised not to fly after his recent surgery.

During an overtake on the A-52 road close to Cernadilla, near Zamora (which is about 10 miles into Spain from Portugal), his Lamborghini Huracan experienced a tire burst.

The expensive car, valued at approximately £180,000, reportedly overturned and ignited, leaving firefighters unable to rescue the two soccer players. There were no other cars involved in this incident, as confirmed by the police.

The unfortunate event occurred a few days following Jota’s marriage to Rute Cardoso, whom he has three young children with, on June 22.

Jota participated in a total of 182 matches for Liverpool, contributing to their successful Premier League championship team led by Arne Slot during the previous season.

Alongside representing Portugal’s national soccer team, Jota had a sibling, Andre, who was playing for the Portuguese second league club, Penafiel, at the age of 26.

Liverpool, in a unique tribute, have decided to permanently retire jersey number 20 across all their teams to honor the memory of Diogo Jota.

For the very first time, their esteem for him was so great that they chose to make this unprecedented decision, showing just how highly regarded he was among them.

Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, along with other family members, paid a visit to the flowery tribute set up at Anfield in his memory.

On Tuesday, Liverpool’s team resumed training and is set to make their comeback in a game this Sunday, following the unfortunate incident at Preston. A moment of silence will be held in remembrance during that match.

In response, both teams will don black bands on their sleeves, while the Championship team is set to place a wreath at the front of the opposing fans’ section.
