Oh my gosh, I just read Rochelle Humes talking about how Marvin asked her out, and it’s SO wild! Apparently, it was a little…creepy by today’s standards! She actually said he’d totally get ‘cancelled’ if he tried that now. I’m obsessed with them, and honestly, it sounds like something straight out of a rom-com! I need to know exactly what he did!
Married for 14 years and parents to Alaia Mai (12), Valentina (9), and Blake (5), the couple first met in 2010 when their bands both played shows in Ireland.
During an appearance on the Great Company podcast, host Jamie Laing asked her about how she first connected with him. He explained that he reportedly took her phone, saved his number, and then called himself – essentially initiating contact that way.
“That’s so strange!” Rochelle said, and Jamie agreed, calling it “really weird and creepy.” Rochelle then added, “You’d be in serious trouble now!”
Rochelle explained that Marvin from JLS orchestrated their first meeting. Both The Saturdays and JLS performed at a concert in Dublin, and Marvin asked for their tables to be placed together at the afterparty.
Rochelle briefly stepped away from her bag to use the restroom, and Marvin quickly took the opportunity to find her phone number.
“Seriously, who doesn’t know you should never rummage through a woman’s purse?” Rochelle chuckled. “Her dad is absolutely mortified by the story – he keeps saying he raised her son with better manners than that.”
I seriously couldn’t believe it when Rochelle found out! She had absolutely no idea anything was going on until we were back at the hotel, finally relaxing, and then Marvin called. It was just… shocking. I was practically glued to the phone waiting for something to happen, and then that call came. I mean, poor Rochelle, she was completely in the dark!
Rochelle admitted that the thought made her uncomfortable, so she wanted to get it over with quickly.
Okay, so he called, and then immediately after, I got a call from a number I didn’t recognize. Naturally, I answered, and it was him – Marvin. Just hearing his voice sent shivers down my spine, honestly. It was… awful.
He’s going to be furious he can’t defend himself, because he insists he never used that voice, but I assure you he did.
He invited me to his room, but I politely declined. He quickly clarified he just wanted to hang out and relax, assuring me it wasn’t anything more than that.
Anyway, I didn’t take him up on his offer.
Then, a strange message came through. He asked me out to dinner, and eventually, I accepted.
Okay, so I was honestly trying to convince myself I didn’t like him, you know? It was ridiculous. My friends totally saw right through it, though – they kept saying he seemed really sweet, and I guess deep down I knew they were right. I think I was just fighting it, trying to protect myself from… something. It was like I didn’t want to like him, but I couldn’t help it!
Rochelle shared that she and her date went to a McDonald’s drive-thru for their first date, hoping to avoid attention from fans.
I remember that day so clearly! I ordered a Filet-O-Fish – I always get it without cheese – and a delicious apple pie. We just wanted some time to talk, so we drove around Wembley in his nice car. It was a simple but perfect little outing.
We were just driving around, and it was actually really nice. He seemed genuinely himself, and I felt like I could be honest with him too. He was very open about his feelings for me, and it was surprisingly refreshing – not awkward at all.
I was just telling my sister about her new boyfriend. She really likes him, and he seems like a great guy.
She said it felt strange because if anyone else had been saying those things, it would have really bothered her.
It was so clear what he meant. He was essentially proposing, and my reaction was just, ‘Okay.’ I wasn’t shocked or upset at all.
As it turns out Marvin was right, and the pair ended up tying the knot in 2012.
Rochelle also mentioned she gets help around the house six days a week to manage things while she balances her job and raising her children.
The 37-year-old singer, previously with the group The Saturdays, has hired someone to help with housework and school runs from Monday to Saturday.
She admitted she wasn’t doing the podcast alone, saying, ‘I want to be honest – I have a team helping me!’
I have a wonderful helper who is with me from Monday to Saturday mornings, and she’s a huge support, keeping things running smoothly.
‘When Marvin is at his radio show and I am somewhere like here, she is there until I get back.’
She mentioned people often ask if they have a nanny, something they don’t have, and clarified that the woman they do have helps more around the house.
Rochelle was comfortable mentioning she received help with household chores during the interview, but she admitted she was most worried about telling her mother, Roz Wiseman.
She remembered being very anxious about telling her mother she was seeking help. Her mother’s initial reaction was to express that she was the only one who would care for her grandchildren.
She asked, somewhat sarcastically, if I thought I was too good to do the dishes. I simply replied that I just needed a little help.
I was terrified to tell her, as she became incredibly angry. She reacted by saying she had no idea who we thought we were.
