Robson Green reveals he was saved from his cocaine addiction by therapy and has replaced it with cold water swimming

Robson Green has shared how he overcame his cocaine addiction through therapy, explaining that he nearly lost control of his life at the beginning of his acting career.

The 60-year-old actor revealed he used to depend on drugs and alcohol, but now finds well-being through cold water swimming.

Robson often swims in the water near Hadrian’s Wall, usually after walking along it two or three times a week.

The actor, known for his role in Grantchester, shared that he’s replaced alcohol and cocaine with a new, healthy habit: cold water swimming. He described swimming as his current source of support, having previously relied on those substances.

In the 1990s, Robson became well-known for starring in popular TV dramas like Soldier Soldier, Touching Evil, and Wire in the Blood.

He sought therapy to deal with his struggles with substance abuse, after a colleague on the set of Touching Evil expressed their concerns to him.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how pressure can impact someone’s wellbeing, and the story of actor Robson is a stark example. He shared with me that while playing a tough police chief, someone actually told him to stop filming, essentially telling him to handle his own issues. It was a really pivotal moment. His therapist laid it out clearly: he had a choice to make – a path towards healing and health, or one leading to self-destruction. It’s a powerful reminder that we all face crossroads, and choosing the right path is crucial.

The actor told The Sunday Times that realizing he was losing himself was difficult, but hearing about the physical changes to his face was especially upsetting.

Robson has been dating Zoila Brozas, whom he met at the gym in 2016. Their relationship gained public attention when Zoila’s former husband, a church minister, publicly shared his sadness about their divorce.

He explained that their connection wasn’t about someone leaving another person. They simply met at the gym – both single at the time. While she was married to a minister, he emphasized they were both independent individuals when they connected. He admired her fitness, and he was in good shape himself, not yet sixty. She was impressed by his clean and jerk technique, and he feels there wasn’t much more to it than that.

Robson was blamed for causing Reverend Geoffrey Short to doubt his religious beliefs after his wife, who was from the Philippines and they had been married for 16 years, left him.

I was so shocked to hear this, but apparently, Mr. Short’s wife, Zoila – she’s a wonderful Sunday school teacher – first met Robson about six weeks ago at a gym just outside of Newcastle. It’s just unbelievable!

As their relationship developed, the television personality – who has been married twice before – is said to have invited the mother of two to live with him in his upscale country apartment close to Morpeth, in Northumberland.

Reverend Short shared with his congregation at St. Columba’s Church in Wideopen, near Newcastle, that he’s been going through a tough time recently, saying, ‘The past few weeks and months have been difficult for me.’

During a recent service, which lasted about an hour, I was really touched by a beautiful moment of faith. The speaker ended with a heartfelt wish – he simply hoped Robson Green and Zoila would find happiness together. It was such a genuine and lovely thing to say, and really resonated with everyone present.

Someone in the church led a prayer for the vicar, Geoff, and his family, offering support during this very sad and challenging time.

Tom Brittney, known for his role in the ITV series Grantchester, shared that he was surrounded by around 2,000 enthusiastic fans while in Las Vegas last summer.

He plays the role of Detective Inspector Geordie Keating on the hit ITV drama.

The popular ITV series, inspired by James Runcie’s Grantchester Mysteries books, has found success in both the UK and the US, gaining Robson Green a dedicated American fanbase.

In an interview with The Mirror, he explained that he and Rishi Nair attended a Grantchester promotional event in Las Vegas last summer. They anticipated around 100 attendees, but were surprised by a turnout of approximately 2,000 enthusiastic fans.

‘It was like being at a Taylor Swift concert…it was so surreal.’

I absolutely love hearing Robson talk about connecting with US fans! He mentioned they really made an effort to chat with them, and it’s so clear how much that meant to everyone involved. It’s wonderful to know they took the time to really engage with people across the pond.

This experience truly reminded me how much I love this show. It’s special because it connects with people from all walks of life and explores ideas that everyone can relate to.

As a long-time Emmerdale fan, I was really interested to see Rishi Nair step into the role of Vicar Alphy Kottera last year! It was a big change after Tom Brittney moved on, but I think Rishi has brought a fresh energy to the character.

Tom, who previously starred as Reverend Will Davenport starting in 2019, unexpectedly returned to the show – not as an actor, but as the director.

The actor looked completely different from how he usually appears, with a beard, a dark baseball cap, and a casual hoodie.

James Norton, known for his role in Happy Valley, was the first actor to play the detective vicar when the ITV drama began in 2014. He passed the role on to Tom in 2018.

When Tom decided to leave the show, he shared how much he’d enjoyed playing Will Davenport over the past five years. He loved working alongside a fantastic cast and crew and especially appreciated getting to solve mysteries with his on-screen best friend.

I’m going to miss this terribly, but it’s the right time to move on. It’s like when the role was passed to me – now it’s Rishi’s turn, and I’m thrilled he’s becoming part of the Grantchester team.

The actor playing the vicar on Grantchester cried real tears while filming his last scenes in 2023.
