As a long-time fan of Grantchester, I can hardly contain my excitement! With Robson Green and Tom Brittney set to return in 2025, it feels like Christmas has come early. The anticipation is palpable as we eagerly await the new season, especially with the news that this will be Tom Brittney’s final outing as Will Davenport.

ITV drama Grantchester starring Robson Green and Tom Brittney has confirmed a 2025 return date.

In the upcoming season of the detective series, the role of co-lead Brittney as Will Davenport will be her final appearance, and viewers won’t have to wait much longer for fresh episodes.

The announcement has been made that our favorite show returns for its ninth season on ITV1, starting January 8 at 9pm. Be sure to jot it down in your calendar!

In the upcoming installments, Davenport encounters an extraordinary proposition which could lead him to leave Grantchester behind.

Originally appearing on the show during its fourth season, Brittney took over the role of Reverend Sidney Chambers from James Norton. Later on, Rishi Nair, previously known for his role in Hollyoaks, will step into the shoes of Brittney, portraying Reverend Alphy Kotteram.

Nair playfully outlined his personality: “He’s the optimistic type, always upbeat and smooth-talking. Yet, he carries a hidden strength, like a firm hand within a soft glove, which Daisy aptly describes as ‘an iron fist in a velvet glove.'” This man aims to assist others, but has a stern side too.

If something morally conflicts with his beliefs, he will unfailingly challenge it. He finds it unacceptable to ignore such matters. There’s plenty of room for expressing this idea in various ways.

Alphy enjoys his solo life without seeking a partner. Both Geordie and Tessa occasionally suggest he might benefit from companionship, but Alphy socializes with women, enjoys their company, and maintains a casual approach to relationships.

It was confirmed last year that Brittney would be leaving Davenport. However, the series was later given the green light for its tenth season in June 2024.

He expressed that the past five years playing Will Davenport have been simply extraordinary for him. He was fortunate enough to work on solving crimes alongside his dearest friend, and collaborate with an exceptional cast and crew. He anticipates missing this experience above all else.

“But it’s time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me, and I’m so excited for Rishi to join the Grantchester family.”

Grantchester will return on January 8, 2025 at 9pm on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STVPlayer.
