Robo-Nazis Invade Scotland: Can You Survive Grit And Valor 1949?

Grit And Valor 1949 (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, £19.99)

Verdict: A bridge too far

It’s possible that my focus in history class wasn’t optimal, but I’m uncertain if the Second World War extended until 1949, with the Allies cornered in Scotland while the Germans dominated, all thanks to a newly developed, overpowering weapon – colossal robotic armor, referred to as mechs.

But Grit And Valor 1949 is here to tell me different.

In an alternate scenario, you’ll be taking control of mechanical units and spearheading the Allied resistance, starting in the Highlands and advancing all the way to Berlin.

In this strategy, you’re transported across various battlegrounds where you primarily safeguard your command unit from hordes of robot-Nazis by skillfully arranging your mech squad.

Different types of mechanized units excel in dealing with various threats – some are more effective against projectiles, while others against flames, and so forth. Essentially, it’s an enhanced version of the strategy game genre commonly referred to as ‘Tower Defense’.

And, whenever you’re playing one of its short battles, it’s compulsive.

The gameplay is fast. The graphics attractive. The blasted, rusted world has plenty of character.

After your demise, your entire team gets swept away by a surge of enemies that proved too numerous, forcing you to begin anew from the start.

In Scotland, with the added advantage of knowing what lies ahead, thanks to your newfound information, and having the opportunity to utilize enhancements that you’ve acquired throughout your journey.

Can you push on further this time?

If the battles were a tad more engaging and the upgrading system appeared less like a collection of seemingly arbitrary numbers, that would be acceptable.

In an altered scenario that I propose, let’s wind down for today and allow the Germans to take charge of Scotland instead.
